Okay, just a few guidelines on picking anyone that wins at Indianapolis.......
1. Experience Counts. More so than at any other track, at The Brickyard, experience counts. Although it looks like four similar corners and similar straights...they are all different due to weather conditions. Don't underestimate the place.
The Team In the old days, one had to look at the type of car and the type of driver.....sadly, not anymore. Everyone runs the same engine and chassis. Today, it's more on who checks the car out on final inspection than who builds it. Again, rule number one comes into play. Experience counts......go on who has been there before....and there is victory lane.
2. The Unknown Factor . Baseball Legend Branch Rickey once said, "Luck is the residue of design." Some make their own luck. This is once of the many reasons this race is so much fun to watch and why some of us are so passionate about it. Anything can and will happen. Remember Parnelli Jones in 1967? Remember Emerson Fittapaldi in 1991 and 1994? Luck, silly luck can show it's ugly head from time to time.
3. Enjoy the sucker! Wilbur Shaw used to say, "If we could pick who is going to win every year.....Why should we run the race? Of all the races in all different types of racing, The Indy 500 is the most special to most of us. It's history, it's legend and lore has no equal in all of racing. None! That's why it is almost 100 years old. This is the only race I tape every year and watch again later on....to see the drama and spectacle play out again...It's magic! It's still the one event I look forward to every year.
4. Finally....Just remember opinions are like rectums, we all have one... So, the best way is to pick your favorite driver or team, open a beer of favorite beverage, sit back and enjoy. Or try the very scientific approcah.......Take a list of the starting field and place it on a dart board. stand 8 feet away and throw.....
You may get lucky!
Best to you and enjoy the 500! I will!
