I need some help with primer. I only work with 1:18 scale Indy winners, and I'm wanting to redo my Penskes. I've been working on my 2 seater car ride for quite a while, but I'm rally frustrated by peeling paint while pulling off my masking tape. I've been using Krylon Self Etching Primer (Which only seems to come in grey) over my cars, then spraying Tamaya White Primer over it. Followed by Tamaya White.
I tape everything off with Tamaya masking tape, but my paint rips off every time, then I have to re-sand and start anew. I need to find out what I'm doing wrong so I can quit wasting time and money on painting, instead of moving on to the next project.
Any help would be appreciated. Jeff

The first thing I would try, Jeff, would be to use the Krylon regular white primer over the etching primer. You don't say what fails, but I have had no problem using Tamiya topcoats over the Krylon primer. Plus, the Krylon is a lot cheaper than the Tamiya, and easier to find

Doesn’t Tamiya make a metal primer? I believe it’s gray.

The Tamiya metal primer has been discontinued, I just went to the hobby shop to get another can and couldn't find it in the paint rack and the gentleman at the shop[ who does all the ordering look it up and it said Discontinued.

Jeff, I use the same primer combinations, but I think the key is in the tape and the removal process.I use Tamiya tape, but I stick it to the inside of my forearm first to reduce the stickiness, and then peel it off very carefully at a an almost 180 degree angle to the surface. Hope that helps. -Art
