Hello Open Wheel Racing Modeling Members, I'd like some help finding a metal model kit from my youth! In approximately 1962, my parents bought an open wheel metal model for my cousin. I'm hoping to identify this metal model...
The model was a front engine, open wheel racer, 1/24 to 1/18 scale (8 or 9" long), metal construction, rubber tires, steerable and similar to Kurtis Kraft or Watson Roadsters from the Indianapolis 500. In my research, the Monogram Indianapolis Racer is a close approximation, but made of plastic. The model was not the Hubley Indianapolis 500 Racer model.
My internet research has come up empty... any help on open wheel metal models from the early 1960s is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Richard

Great to have you, Richard. This question is not something I can answer but I wish you the best in your search in finding an answer. Is this a quest to find something specific from your childhood or do you build/collect scale open wheel race cars?

Welcome to the form Richard. Intriguing question: a metal model from around 1962, of unknown scale--shouldn't be to hard to answer! Knowing the talent on this forum, though, I wouldn't be surprised if someone here has an answer. In fact, it probably in Patrick's collection! (Besides an amazing talent for building, Patrick has an non-ending source of neat old toys that he converts to super-neat models, and a spare parts box that can be seen from outer space.)

Thanks for the your encouragement! I find the site very interesting especially the copious attention to detail, history and process... very cool! Your art form has several similarities to my restorations of car radios from the 1950s and 60s.
By Patrick's collection, I'm guessing you're referring to Patrick Legend?
Also, to answer Jordan's question above, finding the model is my first challenge, but you never know where the search will lead. Cheers...

Perhaps this one? Made by ERTL in the late 50's early 60's.

This is the same car that I am using to turn into a NOVI.

Hello and thanks... I saw this model in my searches, but don't think it's correct. This is because it appears to be primarily cast from top and bottom (2) pieces and likely has solid wheel shafts (non-steerable). The overall body shape is close, but doesn't have the detail I remember (number of pieces, ability to open see the engine, etc.). Please let me know if this ERTL model is steerable or my assumptions incorrect. Thanks again for you reply, Rich

No, it's not steerable. Solid axles and weights a ton. Splits in two halves of thick metal. The search goes on...

Thanks again for the help... the model must be pretty rare! I've continued my internet search without success... I'm primarily looking at images from searches such as "Indy Racer Scale Model Metal Kit". Suggestions on searches or sites are welcome! Again... I'm looking for a metal kit of an Indy (or possibly European) open wheel racer, front engine, 8-9" long, rubber tires, steerable which was purchased in the early/mid 1960s. The "cigar shaped" open wheel roadster is similar to the post war Offenhauser roadsters and has side exhaust pipe over the rear tire. The Monogram Indianapolis Racer is a close approximation, but made of plastic and it isn't the Hubley Indianapolis 500 Racer.
