Hi Everyone, I conducted a very informal and unscientific survey of some of the users of my GWS decals. I found that some apply the decals without clear coating them and others always clear coat before application. The split seems to be about 50/50. Recently, I've had some issues with the toner flaking on the color portion of the decals. As far as I can tell, this seems to be caused by the paper itself rather then the toner. I've spoken with my paper supplier and he tells me that he always recommends clear-coating the decals before they are applied to the model. So, I now recommend clear coating GWS decals before application. To avoid compatibility issues, I would suggest using the same clear coat that is to be used on the final model. If the final model is not being clear coated, Krylon Crystal Clear acrylic or Microscale Decal Film should work well. Be sure to test any clear coat before using and always use a couple of light mist coats as heavy coats may cause the toner to run or fade. Be sure the clear coat is completely dry before applying the decals. If you're wondering why I don't just clear coat the decals before mailing them, it's those miserable compatibility issues. Clear coats, as we all know, don't always play nicely together. The last thing I want to do is ruin a finished project by having your favorite clear coat react with the decals. I hope this resolves any problems you might have.
Happy New Year!
Gary
