Next conversion. Using a 71 Carousel 1 McLaren but have to use the more square radiator boxes. In the process of casting those in resin. Fairly straight forward conversion after that. I think it's a cool car and not a Shrimp fan myself but love the old sponsorship of that era.

My first task other than taking the car apart and stripping it was to make side pod radiator boxes because the donor car boxes were the 72 McLaren type and incorrect for this car. My only option was to partially take apart my 76 Mario Penske and make resin copies. Not being the best resin caster in the world made this a fairly nerve racking task. I had to be careful not to damage the 76 Mario boxes so I could put them back on the Mario car later. After removing the boxes from the 76 Mario I used the cardboard backing that once had tape wrapped around it. I glued it to a piece of plastic sheet and put modeling clay around the base to make sure the molding rubber wouldn't seep out from underneath. Then I mixed my rubber and poured it over the donor boxes. Once the rubber cured, I cut the cardboard away and had my mold. Then I poured the resin and once cured had resin copies of the boxes. I am no Lance, Kevin or Calvin but all and all the boxes turned out very well. Need to do some sanding and fill a few small holes but not bad for a resin rookie! The good news is that the Mario boxes were not damaged in the least and will go back on soon.

Good work Stu. Resin casting & mold making is all gravity work. Most of us are not privy to pressure casting or vacuum molding.

Finished my driver figure and the body is ready for decals. I took resin driver arms and fashioned them to appear that JM was putting his gloves on. More soon!

I hate when those odd reactions happen... Luckily you are a model building veteran and can easily get it fixed.

A few more details to add but the car is pretty much finished. The donor car was the 72 Caroulsel 1 McLaren. I modified the rear wing during the conversion but decided it was still too wide to be legal in 1974 so I stripped it and sectioned it right down the middle. Much happier with the length now. Will take better photos of the car attached to the base soon.

Nice to see her in this state, Stu. She looks really good. Why section the wing in the middle? Less end plate work?

Nice to see her in this state, Stu. She looks really good. Why section the wing in the middle? Less end plate work? Jordan Good question Jordan and I have two reasons for cutting it down the middle. #1) the McLaren wing used had the McLaren style triangles in each corner at the front edge of the wing. Cutting off the end plates would no doubt destroy these and I would have to spend time re-adding them. #2) if I had cut the end plates off I would have also lost the molded in rivet detail. Cutting it down the middle made the most sense to me. I glued a piece of sheet plastic on the underside to help support the cut down the middle and used liquid cement to help bond everything together and Squadron Putty to fill the cut.

Awesome job Stu! I love this build. Looks great. I remember this car and John Martin well from my youth. What really sticks in my mind is seeing this car being pulled on an open trailer behind a station wagon being driven by John himself. These were the cars and drivers that fostered my love of this deal. Thanks Stu!

I sent Stu’s photo of the finished model (yet to be posted here) to John Martin and the usually stoic Martin could not contain his enthusiasm for this conversion. He was thrilled to see it. NICE GOING STU!!!

Really nice job, Stu. Good job picking up the little details like the blue seat belts. Are those radiator blockers in the sidepods? Jordan Thanks Jordan and yes. JM had those radiator blockers on the car race day. I always try to do race day version when I can. It was a challenge finding photos of this car on race day but was able to find a few at the Indy photo shop. In fact, I started to replicate his helmet and later found out that he wore a different one on race day. Luckily there is about 10 seconds of film of the 74 race on YOUTUBE that showed JM climbing in his car before the start. From that I was able to recreate the helmet he wore on race day too.
