My latest completion is a Hawker Hurricane Mk.I assigned to the Military Aviation Component of the Belgian Armed Forces in 1940. In the late 1930s, Belgium, facing down the potential of an attack from Hitler's Germany, purchased 20 British Hawker Hurricanes with a contract to build an additional 80. The Hurricane was a mix of old and new technology, a continuation in some ways of biplane construction, but also proved ahead of its time in others. Though slightly obsolete in 1940, the venerable mainstay of the Royal Air Force proved a match for anything in the Luftwaffe. The Belgians needed such equipment. By the time the Germans invaded in May 1940 the Belgians had only eleven or so ready for action, assigned to Escadrille (Squadron) 2 and unfortunately all of these were lost on the ground due to bombing and strafing attacks. Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg all fell by summer of that year. That left England all alone, and in a position of grave peril. But in that moment of danger, Britain, through the fortitude and courage of its people, gave Hitler his first battlefield defeat. A defeat that led to the downfall of him and his misbegotten regime. This is a straight box-stock build of the new Airfix kit, I had a great deal of fun with this one. This kit's another home run by Airfix, it really went together well.

Interesting history lesson there. I really like this era and this captures an cool little known plane. Very nicely done build and camo work. What is that logo on the plane? I guess it is the squadron marking!? I cannot tell what it is supposed to depict though...??
Thank you for sharing - she is a nice bird!

Hey Legs.
Love the subject matter and the finish. Mega job. Is this the one with the half black half white underside?
Got a 1/48th job I was thinking of doing the same as yours. Mrs is from Belgium so I do get to see allot of their historical material here and there.
I am no expert but I know quite a few of the Belgian pilots made it over to England and flew with the RAF from 1940 with a few making it to the end of the conflict. Those already trained on the Hurricane were thrown strait into the thick of it.
Nice job. I am inspired. Now where is that kit?

Thank you all for the kind words!
I cannot say enough how impressed I am with the new kits Airfix put out, if you like military aviation, they have kits that are well worth a look. You certainly can't beat the price!
Quattro, your question reminded me I need to take some underside photos! The Belgians received their Hurricanes with an aluminum underside, the kit recommends Humbrol 56 for the bottom. Let me get some photos for you!
I have a great amount of respect for the Polish, French, and Belgian citizens who carried on the fight after 1940. It is incredible you had the chance to meet such fine men!
I'm looking forward to your build.
