Just off the workbench:
Gordon Johncock won the 500 in this car the year I was born. For that reason I'd wanted to build this car for a while, and it intensified every time I got to visit the real thing at Indy. When the Silver City kit became available, I had to get one. I'm glad I did.
The Silver City kit is one of the finest resin kits I've ever built. Beautiful castings, fantastic metal parts, clever assembly, and great customer service from Kevin (who gladly hurried out a part that had somehow gone missing from my kit). There's a lot you have to fit in there but somehow it all works, and your biggest challenge is really painting everything and applying decals. I used the Indycals set; along the way I found a few size discrepancies with some markings, and Michael was kind enough to print some replacements more in scale for the kit.
Paint is Tamiya Fluorescent Orange (TS-36) and Pure White (TS-...oh, whatever it is) over Tamiya Fine White Primer. Tires are airbrushed Tamiya NATO Black. The engine and other components were painted with various acrylics. The white metal parts were polished out with various abrasives until they got an in-scale shine, while any plastic parts that needed metal treatment were done with Vallejo Metal acrylics. Other areas, such as the bright metal parts of the wheels, were painted with a Molotow chrome marker. Tires and wheels were grimed up with a filter coat of really thin black to make them look not so showroom-fresh. The only real change I made to the kit was replacing the resin endplates on the wing with sheet styrene, using the resin endplates as a template.
I had a few hiccups of my own making along the way, and you'll spot a few flubs and amateur moves if you look closely. (The photos also don't capture just how vibrant the finish color is, but we all know about trying to take pictures of bright orange...but trust me, there's no missing this little beast on the shelf.)
Even with my flubs and such, I am very happy with this model. My thanks to Kevin and Michael for all the hard work they put into making these kits a reality, and for outstanding commitment to their customers. Thanks for giving me a great model of a car I've wanted to build for a long time, and for making the process a lot of fun.
