Tonight I finished the McLaren MP4/13 of David Coulthard as it appeared in its McLaren Orange test livery. The season of 1998 saw regulations decreasing the size of cars, with the track size of the machines trimmed down. McLaren adapted brilliantly to the new regulations on size and the new grooved tires provided by Bridgestone. Mika Hakkinen claimed the title-McLaren's first in five years as he held off a late season surge by Michael Schumacher. His teammate David Coulthard finished third in the championship, in addition he won the San Marino Grand Prix and had eight additional podium finishes. My build replicates Coulthard's car in its test livery, which harkened back to the orange McLarens of years past. I built this car from the 1/20 scale Tamiya kit, with decals by Indycals (really excellent set), and McLaren paint by Gravity Colors. This wasn't the easiest kit for me as I had some fit issues, but all in all it turned out great. Thank you for looking!

McLaren thrived in 1998. That was a surprising year for me as I did not expect this out of Mika, who had just won his first race to close 1997 as kind of give-me after Jacques slowed post-contact with Michael. I think this was their first title in 7 years though, Williams and Benetton dominated 92-97.
The build looks great, I have no grasp of the exact shade of papaya but it looks the part. The decals blend well and the car's got a nice finish and shine to it. It sits well, has nice details, and I like the subtle difference in the rims. Are they gunmetal?
Adrian Newey penned another great one with the MP4/13.

Thank you for the kind words, the MP4/13 was as pretty as it was fast and I'm glad to share it here.
The wheels and front wings are both Tamiya gunmetal as a matter of fact based on photos provided here, I think it's close to the car's colors.
