Color blender clear (often called cut in, lock down or inter coat clear) is a great alternative clear for modeling. It’s use in the 1:1 world is as a spot repair aid, base coat protection, color cutting clear and in the custom paint world to lock down artwork. This clear is not intended to be exposed to the elements as it has very little UV protection and is typically top coated with a two part clear to provide UV protection. I use this clear on my Custom Paint Panel Artwork so UV protection is not an issue as would also be the case with models. I really like this clear as it has a relatively low film build up which helps retain details. No hardener which saves on cost and the health, it has a great shine as sprayed. Although not designed as such it can be polished to a mirror like finish. It can be purchased in a quart size for about $100 and add $ 20 for a quart of reducer. Mixed to the proper ratio’s the quart will yield between 2 to 2 ½ quarts of spray able material. With an almost infinite shelf life. IMO this is a bargain compared to rattle can or small amounts of clear $$$$/Oz. The pictures here have color blender clear on them with no polishing. Color Blender clear lays flat and shines like a baby’s bottom. Painters Tip: After opening a hardener for clear, primer, or paint, place the remaining hardener in the frig. This will extend the usability by months’ vs weeks.

Definitely something to look into when we next need clear. This helps simplify all the painting mixing confusion that comes with not being a pro or exposed to mixing professional paints.

Wow Really??? I have a quart of HOK Interclear sitting in the shop but never though of using it as a finish clear coat on a model...will it safely go over Tamiya or Model Master Paints?? I was wondering what to use it on.... For General info: a quart would do about 20 models easily!!!! Chris

Chris,
I use HOK intercoat clear as well and it's basically the same as what I showed. I really can't tell you if it works over those products.... I'd spray out a test panel on some sheet styrene or whatever.....I have used I.C. over many different products with no problems.... However I would give it a test on whatever product you want to topcoat.
I really don't see you having a problem as the I.C. is a very forgiving product!
Looks like you have enough clear to do 20 models..... Yeah!
