Custom exhaust or you have something in that huge box of spares?

Jordan, I'm going to use solder to make the four 3-to-one exhausts. I'll use a "jig" to assemble each one. It won't be exact, but I'll try and make them close.

The exhaust system on this car is unique so I'm going to copy it as best as I can. I'll be studying the Tamiya plans and photos to do it. Basically I started with two 3-into-1 exhausts to experiment with... They are epoxy glued together after shaving down the connected ends. We'll see how progress is! Patrick

Well, after fiddling with this experiment here is one exhaust unit. Looks close... and here's the Honda family... and I'm trying to create the oil tank... Patrick

I got the windscreen cut out. Before I cut it I thought, "Hummmm. Maybe I should make a copy just in case I mess it up." prophetic words all!! The plastic was poor and left a white area where I used the scissors. So I used a new sharp Xacto! Fool, chump, stupido!! I sliced the right side deeply into the windscreen. I've decided not to let it bother me. I now have two exhaust examples in the foreground. Now I have to get some more solder as I can't find the stuff I used before! However, it is coming along well. Better pix later. Patrick

Still looks great, Patrick. I am sure a strategically placed helmet or something similar can cover any knife slips. Keep it up, looking forward to the exhausts.

Here's the goof... I fabricated the small oil radiator...(my hands are showing their age, boy, these parts are hard to hold!) Now that I have all the little stuff done I'll HAVE TO get to the exhaust! Patrick

OK...I used a small diameter solder for the single exhausts... I then epoxied 3 together with a small piano wire for the single exhaust stability... I then bent some tubing to fit the shape... I couldn't use the tubing for the other two shorter exhausts. So, I used a larger solder type that was similar to the single exhaust pipe because it could be molded to shape... All this took a few hours of fiddling so the next job will be the bending to shape the singular exhausts! I think they will look all right when painted and installed. Patrick

Ugh! Well, I did the bending and praying, but I must have slipped up with my visualization. The exhaust is glued on, but not how I thought it should look. Perhaps, I'll leave it for now and return to it later with a reconstruction with the forward exhausts in the center and the rear ones on the outside. The tubing was difficult to bend with the preciseness needed and the solder could work better if the center exhausts were less bent. This was a difficult task, but it's good for now... Now add some trailing links and mirror faces. Patrick Awesome Patrick! Though we do expect nothing less. (Is that Dr. Lou Sell I see lurking in the background? We'll need to see that as well!) MJ

I'll call it finished (but I am considering a new exhaust system!) now that the trailing links are on... Patrick

I think it came out great, especially for a model that marked "the point when you gave up" What sort of dummy post a remark like "the point when you gave up"? That was very disrespectful of me to post that remark, and I apologize for it. OK, now that my karma is evened, will you please move this hurricane southwest!

Brilliant work sir!
