One of my future builds will be the 3 John Zink cars from 1958. I know that the Ed Elisian car (5) and the Jimmy Reese car (16) were brand new cars build by AJ Watson. My question is was the Jud Larsen car (44) also a new one or a year old. Also what is the difference between the 1957 & 1958 Watson? Thanks for the help Terry

According to the book THE WATSON YEARS, the Reese #16 (Watson chassis #3) was new in 1958. The Elisian #5 was a 1957 (chassis #2) first driven by Ruttman and the Larson #44 was chassis #1-- the 1956 winner. What the differences were I don't know. I love the look of these cars. The Reese car is on my to do list.

I do know that the reason Watson left John Zink was because he wanted to build more cars each year and sell them to other teams.

The Larson#44 & Reese's #16 car both had a Fuel buckeye in the Lower left side of the tail cone that was not on the 56 or 57 version of the car. the #5 Ellison car did not have this fuel buckeye In 1957 or 1958.

I don't know what pics are in the yearbook. You probably have these, but I'll post them anyway. Maybe they will help with decal placement. kip

Have to chime in here. The 1956 winner was fitted with some new body work for 1958, mainly the nose, and was run as #44. This car was later converted by Denny Moore as a "dirt roadster" and ran once on a mile dirt track with no success. Jack Zink hated to waste anything and he had Moore convert the car to a supermodified and it ran in that configuration in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas for several years. It has now been restored to its 1956 configuration. Watson's two new cars in 1958 were the Zink 16 and the McNamara 97.
Best, Gary
