I would argue that this car, more than the Cooper, really started the rear engine era at Indy. Not because the car was, at all, successful, but because it brought Dan Gurney, Colin Chapman, and Ford, all to the same place, at the same time. Early this year, Tim Jones sent me some photos of the car, and said "I think I could make this body". I sent Tim a resin copy of a slot car rollerskate, and Jim Stephens was kind enough to take several of photos of what is claimed to be the actual car, at Indy. I'm sure that most of you have seen what Tim came up with. Here is the rest of the story. Tim did all the work on this, and is giving it to Calvin, and to all of us.

Sign me up for kit No.001. Paul Erlendson LOL! Trust me, you dont want 001 as usually thats the most dirtiest one and usually has a screw up in it. It usually takes Calvin a couple pulls to get the bugs worked out of mold. Calvin usually gets 001, because its usually a reject.

Anyone tried using the Revell Indy Lotus slot car which is (in my humble opinion) very off scale. This car actually is a lot closer to the 1962 MT cars just the rear engine cowl and tail need a lot of work. I'd use the Heller/Union Brabham F-III but finding a Buick 215 V8 is a problem (AMT 289 Cobra engine?) The last Nov/Dec or Dec/Jan "Hot Rod Retro" 1962 section has some good shots of the 62 or 63 car. After separating from my wife in October 2016 I packed up everything in a pickup truck and fled CA for the swamps and bugs of FL, I gave away, donated or sold most of my collection. Unpacking I have found I misplaced some things I knew I kept and my extensive library is gone so memory fails on actual dates of things. Anyone in the club live in Spring Hill, Tampa FL area?

Just in case I did not make myself clear, on this. Calvin has everything in the photos, and will be casting this as a partial kit. You will, before long, be able to buy all of this.

What will the rest of the model need to be based on? I presume we'll need another kit for suspension. Paul Erlendson

I don't know of any kit that will supply the suspension, Paul. There will be some scratchbuilding involved.

I don't know of any kit that will supply the suspension, Paul. There will be some scratchbuilding involved. That's fine. Over the years of me trying to create this car I've come up with a couple of ideas for the suspension. Hopefully I'll soon be able to challenge myself and figure it out. One thing I don't see is a windscreen buck. Will a vacuform windscreen be part of the "transkit"? Paul Erlendson

There will be a windscreen. Any other details will be up to Calvin. Everything is his now.

Let's start with the model history...Craig is a "Super Gurney Fan"...I was aware that no drawings existed, and the cars have been modified since 1962...I found a picture in Indy's Wildest Decade... I told Craig that this picture was very close to 1/25 or 1/24...based on a 4 inch wheelbase and 2 inch track...later, I learned from Walt's measurement of the actual car, that these are extremely close.. This picture comes from Indianapolis Racing Memories 1961-1969... Starting with these, I began scratch building...I told Craig what I was up to (making the car for him) and he asked "don't you want one?" I said yes, but how?...Craig then asked Calvin if he would pour a few resin bodies and Calvin agreed... At that time I began to envision the car from a resin maker, so I changed some things to make it easier to cast...upon seeing the master, Calvin asked if he could use it for a kit...I said "Sure, if I get a few bodies for myself" Soooooooooo, the project is in limbo as Calvin is looking it over, making a few changes, and deciding how he wants to proceed: should he add suspension pieces or call it a trans kit? How many can he sell? Does it fit his product line? Etc... The changes that I can see are as follows: the left front scoop in front of the tire needs to be larger and "molded in"...the wheels are flat, but the car actually had the spokes rising up to the hub...that was waaaaaaaay too much work for me to accomplish...I made the car with handed tires, as they appear on race morning...other pictures show all threaded tires; Not handed...also, I learned from Calvin that most resin casters pour the body, then cut panel lines, and then recast...I didn't realize what a PITA that could be... Now, comments about suspension....please note... A builder can go with the body and ignore all the space frame, or go crazy and do it all...I tried to make it where you can go "box stock" or complete space frame with massive detailing...you could cut along the panel lines and open the entire engine area...I used a modified AMT stock block with custom fuel injection...trans was scratch built to match photos... In conclusion, I really like this photo: Yes, Roger and Dan were young once...the car has a high cool factor...it has 2 outstanding paint schemes: qualifying and race...Craig is doing race, and I'm doing qualifying...so encourage Calvin, let him know your thoughts, and be patient: it is COLD in his neck of the woods...it is also funny how this all came to be: just 2 guys looking for a Holy Grail... Tim

Hi everyone. Happy New Year! I, for one, commit to buy one kit, of whatever level of detail is feasible. I would love to have the Dan Gurney race day version on the shelf. If a body, windscreen, chassis, decals and the round things are available, I'll endeavor to cobble up the rest. Calvin, stay warm. All the best to all, Dan Parke

All Im doing is what you see in the master picture. Im just copying what I got. Just like what was agreed on behind closed doors....I never had intentions of doing a full blown kit.... Of course, I'll tweak on it but I have ZERO plans to engineer, research, or cast small little suspension parts....I'm getting too old for that craziness. Everyone will have to run wild with how they want to detail it. Most of the suspension can be built using styrene rod and Im very sure Craig and Tim will show how to do all of it. Craig and Tim are the experts on this project....Im just the brainless copy machine.

The "brainless copy machine?"...No, you are the guy who does the PITA mold(s) and PITA resin pouring...since retiring from that job, I have a REAL appreciation for what that entails...Craig and I already have different ways to approach the suspension, but it should be easy as I made a bulkhead for the front, just to hang suspension pieces on... Calvin; I understand your position....the research and engineering on the small pieces usually drives the cost of the kit to sky-high levels...an example is the Pinto Models...I would love to buy bodies from him for about half the price...I rarely display an open hood, so Pinto's kits have great detail that is never seen...then watching Lance mess with spun cast parts that he doesn't control, so he has to purchase and wait for a third party to deliver...etc.etc.etc... Sooooo, thank you! If somebody wants this car, they can do what they want with it because it is a good starting point... Happy New Year to All! May your 2017 bring you the builds you want, and the time to do them... Tim

Until the weather warms up I will not be able to cast anything.....besides the some of the pipes in the house are freezing up, currently here.....so casting resin is REALLY out of the question! LOL It was -17 just up the road from here....-10 at my fort last night
and I refuse to cast resin inside the house.....plus I cant pressure cast in the house anyway....I know Gary D. does, but im not Gary! LOL

Calvin; I understand your position....the research and engineering on the small pieces usually drives the cost of the kit to sky-high levels... Mostly the frustration level can't be paid for! LOL Thats the most dreaded part of making kits, SUSPENSION PARTS!!!! The builder usually has to modify the parts anyway to make them fit.....some of the best resin kits still have fit issues Thats why I never complain about other resin builders kits....because I realize the total struggle!

And here it is. It's my understanding that Michael is doing both Qualifying, and Race decal sheets. When they are ready, Calvin will release the kit. There are some differences between the qualifying car, and the race day car. Both can be built from the kit. I can't thank Tim, and Calvin enough for making this happen.
