I started this conversion in January of 2010. At the time I was just going to use a Kurtis Kraft by itself. The first photo shows the car in 2010. Midway thru the build I realized that I would not be happy with the replica as a Kurtis Kraft. The real Kuzma was more of a cigar shape and using the Kurtis Kraft would not be anywhere near correct so I put the car in a box and worked on other things. Fast forward to nearly 7 years later I decided that I wanted to do this car proper. I dismantled the Kurtis Kraft and started doing the body modifications necessary to make it look like a Kuzma. Lots of body filler was needed to make the cigar shape so that is where I am at today. Sticking with it this time to make this car come to life. 2010 Version Today I glued a plastic rod along the body so I could use it as reference to how much filler to add on both sides and be even. I then started applying filler More filler and more filler. Made tabs to keep the hood and body fillers from touching and still be able to gage the thickness of the filler. Here we are today. More later!

Hang in there, Stu. I tried to do the same thing to a Monogram Kurtis several years ago. I never was able to make it look right, so it's in a box, and on the shelf. My main problem was that the Kuzma is a smaller car than the Kurtis. If anybody can pull this off, it's you. Looking forward to more. Gary Sleeper can fix you up with the decals.

Main body is very near completion. Spot filling and scribed in body lines. The seat I have needed to be wider so I cut it right down the middle and added filler in the center and shaped. Then I painted and added the seat pattern with a decal I printed.

I ran into a snag that I needed to figure out. The hood hinge on the Kurtis Kraft is raised where on the Kuzma it was pretty flush with the hoods. I decide the best way to do this was to shim the hinge itself so I could make the hinge flush with the hoods best I could. Below is the process I used. I thought of gluing the hoods shut but I wanted them functional so you could see the engine. Before Shims Placing shims. Final Result.

Stroke of genius!!!!!! No it's what we do. Just sit back & ponder it & you'll always come up with a solution, may be lots of extra work but ya gotta do it. I've never seen Stu stumped.

You don't know my wife then Ralph! She stumps me all the time! LOL Truth be told we're all in that boat! Wonderful solution but I have to ask the question. Does the hing operate as before or is the swing compromised? And I wouldn't have a clue, is that the way the real car was? Paul Erlendson

Yes & yes Paul. Look at the photo of the real car above and see how flush it is with the hoods.

Nice work, Stu! I'm curious, would the hinge even have been accurate for the Kurtis as it was before?

Art. It's fairly close on the C1. The hinge on a real Kurtis is raised up towards the nose of the car but flush at the rear.

A friend sent me a photo of the rear end of the Kuzma. I had not seen one before so my rear end was solid and did not have the vent. I felt I needed to do it so I honed out the tail. Will add the grill vent later. I was also shown a photo of the cockpit which showed a water drinking pouch that Jimmy Bryan could drink from during the race so I scratch built it and placed in the cockpit. Here are just some other photos of progress. This is what the car looks like as of today mocked up. Thanks to Michael for his help on the contingency decals. I also am using Michael's body line decals. They really set it off if you ask me. Need to clear and then start assembly.

Wow! I've been trying to come up with a nickname for Stu. Mark Gustafson of Scale Auto and the GSL Model Contest is known as the "Putty Thrower". Stu could be called the Putty.....(fill in the blank)
