I just completed tonight my replica of the sprint car Johnny Mantz campaigned in the 1949 season. Between late 1948 through 1950 Mantz had a tremendous skein of victories, winning three AAA Champ Car races, nine sprint car mains, and his biggest victory in the inaugural Southern 500 NASCAR Grand National race. He finished second in the AAA Eastern (I believe) sprint car championship in 1949 as well.
Mantz had a great career and turned to promoting races after his career and died before his time in a traffic accident in 1972. The winner of the Southern 500 wins the "Johnny Mantz Trophy" to this day.
The car is one of Gary Doucette's latest kits and it's his best kit yet. It went together with few difficulties. The parts are well cast and the push bars are a masterpiece of metalworking. This was a fun build. The car's painted Tamiya racing white with some drops of yellow, Duplicolor flame red on the nose, the seats a mixture of Tamiya gloss red with flat brown to give a semigloss, darker red.
