In my quest to build all Lola T-900's that ran in the 1985 season I am now in dire need of photos of one of the most elusive ones: the #14 car driven by A.J. Foyt at Sanair. The car only ran this one race, the rest of the season A.J. used his March 85C. I will build the model using the Indycals decals for the March, as I assume the Lola ran with the same stickers, but I need to know the placement of the decals on the Lola. I have some very grainy screendumps from the YouTube video of the race, and that's all. If anybody has any - ANY - photos of the car or ideas to where I might be able to find some, it will be greatly appreciated!

The 1985 Lola would be designated a Lola T8500, the Lola T900 series would be built in 1990 and on, according to their designation chart adding a 0 after the chassis designation T900 vs T9000 would be a car run in qualifying and race. .. Google T8500 I am sure you will have a bit more results..

Contact Ron McQueeney, retired head of the IMS photography department. The other thing to do is try to discover who has the negatives of the late Dennis Torres, who attended every race back in the day and will certainly have those photos.

Google T8500 I am sure you will have a bit more results.. No, the 1985 car is actually the T-900 - I have factory drawings and correspondance with Nigel Bennett to prove it! But the Lola nomenclature is somewhat confusing. The Indycars started in 1983 with the T-700, the 1984 car was the T-800, and the 1985 car was the T-900. Then they ran out of "hundreds", so the numbering system was changed to a four-digit number, the two first digits being the year, and the two last the type of car. The Indycars were the "00" series, so the 1986 car was the T 8600 or T 86-00, and they followed this nomenclature right through to the end of the company, sometimes giving the superspeedway cars the suffix -01. In 1998 Lola was sold to Martin Birrane, and the T was changed to a B, but otherwise the nomenclature stayed the same. To confuse matters more the Lola that took Graham Hill to Indy victory in 1966 was the T-90! Bo

Bo - If you go on YOUTUBE you can watch the race. AJ was only in the race for approximately 25 laps or so but you see his Lola in a few shots. The quality of the video is not the greatest but I can tell you the car is all one color. Foyt Poppy Red. Not much more detail I can provide. Stu

Thanks a lot, Stu, that is certainly very helpful. I have watched that video many times, but it can be very difficult to make out the details, particularly the placement of the decals which are often just white blobs on a grainy red car! But I agree with you that the car is all red, and I assume that the decals are all the same that were on the March that AJ used in all other races that year. I think I'll just guesstimate the placement from where the decals were on the March and get building, using the set of Indycals decals that I got from Michael at Indy in May. Watch this space!

They interview AJ after he is out of the race. Sadly I didn't see any footage to what put him out. Even race data bases have the results showing he was driving an 85 March but they obviously got it wrong.

Found a scan of the 1985 results from back of the Autocourse CART 20 Year edition on an Amazon preview, it did not list AJ. I guess because he did not score a point? Seems like a waste to omit competitors that actually ran. Anyways, there was nothing useful from that page - not sure about the rest of the book though.

Autocourse are great, my collection goes back to the 1969-1970 season. They do lack complete results in US racing however. Many books are full of small errors like this, even the Dick Wallen books which are strictly US based motorsport history. Something as subtle as a chassis change is sometimes lost to the ages. I would not sweat the decal placement as the stills harvey captured will get you close enough as to not offend any of your house guests!

On the nose, it definitely from the bottom is the Coyote decal, #14, the Gilmore "G", and then a small Copenhagen can. The side looks like Copenhagen, then little Jockey shirt logo (can't remember the name of the stables), Valvoline underneath a Champion, I can't make out the rest, but I can assure you he probably has the two different PPG decals and then possibly Earl's and/or inspection sticker.
