Ah, what have I been doing…. Discovering that building this model is nothing like an injected plastic model with all the parts neatly numbered on sprues A, B C and D! My next step I’m taking on is building up the fuel injector assembly and it’s made up of a lot of very small parts. As shown in the photo I’ve taken all the small parts and placed them together. I’m now in the process of figuring out where they all go. I’ve created containers for sub-assembles and trying to get all the parts together. Paul Erlendson

Placing all the small parts together sound like a good idea, that way you can lose them all at once! Looking good. Build on... --Frank

It's been too long since I worked on this model. I've never put it away. Everything is laid out on a side table in my model room. Tonight just seemed right to get all my photos reinstalled. Paul Erlendson

Paul, I'm really looking forward to seeing your AAR Eagle to completion. It's my all time favorite F1 car, as 1967 is a very special year for me. I finally made it to the Glen for the F1 race, and saw all those magnificent cars in person. Joel

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done any work on this model, but I actually have an update! I’ve been playing around with a 1/25th scale project of mine. The 1966 Gurney Eagle 201. Dan Gurney’s ill-fated 1966 Indy car. It’s turning into quite the kit bash with I hope a minimum of scratch building, but fitting parts from the various kits I’m using has been a bit of a challenge and I was having trouble visualizing the chassis. Well, I basically have the chassis, so why not build it up in 1/20th scale, so I can see what I want to do in 1/25th scale. One of these days I’ll feel like I’m far enough along with it to start a separate thread. The interior tub parts for the MFH Eagle are all beautifully cast white metal so all I had to do was spent some time polishing them with a green 3M pad. Then it’s just a matter of drilling a few holes open and start the assembly process. Here I’m using a medium viscosity super glue. Paul Erlendson

Paul,
The tub really looks great. I especially like the rivet detail that's molded in. Hoping see the next update much sooner then later.

Thought since I’ve got the interior frame work of the chassis glued together, it was time to see how some of the other pieces fit to it. Quite nicely IMO. Paul Erlendson

Of course we all get to the point of having to mock things up, right? At least with me it’s a feeling of progress. In the case of this kit, it’s also telling me that it would be best to follow the kit instructions. I really wanted to build up the chassis as is done with the real car and then paint it, but in this case it looks to me that I’ll have to apply the Eagle blue prior to securing the outside skin to the interior bulkheads. Whilst I’ve been playing with my Gurney Eagle, my wonderful wife Suzanne was doing work next door in her sewing room. Making much better progress than me and more important work too. Below is a photo to show the results of her labor. 30 scarfs that she created along with 30 sets of gloves that she purchased and then matched with the scarfs. We delivered them to the local women’s and children’s shelter last Monday just in time for Christmas, where they were very warmly (no pun intended) received. I am constantly humbled and proud of the work that she does for others. Paul Erlendson

A number of years ago I was doing some research on this car and I decided to contact AAR. I got a very nice response from Kathy Weida who told me that in fact chassis 104 was in the shop at that moment. She was able to have someone take a number of photos of the engine as it was out of the car. She also supplied me with the proper paint codes for the car. Glasurit Brand Paints - Metallic dark blue base # 5 4 - 6 M - 5 0 3 5 and Clear Coat 9 2 3 - 5 5 White (Roundels) 5 4 - M 2 5 White Pearl (body stripe) 6 9 - M - 0 1 0 with the same clear coat 9 2 3 - 5 5 She also invited me down to check out the car in person. Years later I still have regrets on not taking up her offer. During the last couple of weeks I’ve been reading “Dan Gurney Nostalgie” by Phil Henny. You can download the Kindle version from Amazon for $3.99 or free with Kindle Unlimited membership. I found this page of the book very interesting. Seems like they’ve had to find different colors to use. I love the back story on why Dan picked this color for his car. Paul Erlendson

Thank you, Paul, for sharing this. It seems there actually is a way to end our discussions about what is the right color. I love this forum for uncovering this kind of information and it appearing here. Not only are you a wonderful builder but your knowledge of racing and hence modeling is remarkable. Jim

It will probably be awhile as at the moment I have other priorities. I certainly have enjoyed seeing your build. Wonderful job! When I do get back to my Eagle I hope I can come close to your standards. Paul Erlendson
