Over the last few years, especially after I retired, due to poor health at times and my continued fight with AMS (Advanced Modeler’s Syndrome) I haven’t been as productive as I wanted. Last month on our drive back from Seattle and the IPMS Seattle Spring Show my good buddy Tom gave me a big talking to. Often I’m taking one of my cheaper kits and trying to scratch build too much or take a good kit and get a little too involved with detail. An example of one is my Ferrari 126C2. Now on that one I was going great guns and then had to stop as I had to tear down my model room for painting and new carpeting last summer. By the time we got the house back together I had lost my momentum. I will get that back on that on as I really like what I’ve done and what I’ve got planned for it. But, back to my friend Tom. He urged me to take one of my best overall kits and one of my all-time favorite cars and build it. So, I present to you in real time, and hopefully not too slow, my Model Factory Hiro 1967 Gurney Eagle Spa Grand Prix winner. Got all my research material gathered. Calvin, when I finish this will it qualify me for the coveted and sought after Classic Racing Resins Lotus 34 award? Paul Erlendson

If you haven't got the kit yet, I have an extra one I will sell you for what I paid for it + shipping.

MURPHY'S LAW For MODELERS, Rule # 17- The more information you have the more confused you become.
It's happened to me!

Amen, Sandy, too much research can bring any build to a halt. Don't worry about the Lotus, Paul, I doubt that it will happen in our lifetimes. Plenty of other projects to work on.

Calvin, when I finish this will it qualify me for the coveted and sought after Classic Racing Resins Lotus 34 award? I'll have to ask my advisor, Craig Miller. He calls all the shots, I don't have much say these days.....it's the downside of shareholders.

Does that mean that I can expect a dividend check shortly?

I don't think they mail checks until the check amounts are bigger than the stamp value....

Paul Erlendson Ah, the Model Factory Hiro 1/20th scale Anglo American Racers 1967 Daniel Sexton "Dan" Gurney #36 Eagle Mk1/T1G Gurney-Westlake V12 Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps winner. A very nice looking kit. Have you done an inventory yet to see if it is all there and undamaged? Might be a good idea to get replacement parts (if needed) on the way soon as to not stall out your build momentum. You have gone over MarcoSaupe's build of the 1/20, right? I have enjoyed all of his build, especially the 1967 F1 cars. Interesting to see him building the 1/12 T1G after building the 1/20 previously. Jordan

Yes, thank you, I’m going through all the parts to make sure I have everything and that all the parts are undamaged. I take the parts out of their bags and put them in clear plastic boxes that gamers used for their cards. And yes I’ve followed Marco’s build of his 20th scale car on F1M and his 12th scale effort that he’s working on now. Here’s where I start. Lots of clean up the chassis interior, engine block and rear end. Using steel wool and green 3M green pads I hope to replicate the bare metal finish. I’ll also play with some washes. Paul Erlendson

I bought one in 1/12 scale and at this time have too many other project unfinished to start this kit. When I do I want to concentrate on it alone so I will finish it.
Good Luck and have fun!

After a long weekend in front of the TV watching races it’s time to get back to work. Here are the pieces for the engine block. A lot of holes to drill and deepen. I’ll clean up the edges that glue together as I go and once I have the basic block together minus the cam covers glued together I’ll start working on the surfaces with steel wool. Paul Erlendson

Just encountered an interesting and somewhat frustrating situation. In building up the engine block I reached the point where I’m ready to glue the rear block piece (M4) and the sump pan (M7) into place. But, the sump won’t fit because of the double L shape on the interior face of the rear block piece. Fortunately I had downloaded all the photos on the MFH site when the model was released. In reviewing them all, I found these three photos that they took of their build up. Looks to me like they took a notch out of the sump to get it to fit. They certainly don’t mention this in the instructions! I presume that anyone else that has built the kit has run into this. I’m checking with other modelers that have built this kit before I start taking a chunk out of the sump. I never expected a problem like this from a MFH kit. Paul Erlendson

For what it's worth, I met a guy at the Rosco Turner IPMS show that had built a 1/20 Eagle. He said he was surprised at how fidly it was. He told me there was a LOT of test fitting.

Think I've solved the problem on the Gurney Eagle. Instead of cutting a notch out of the oil sump as Model Factory Hiro had done on their build, I elected to keep the sump as I think it should look and removed a portion of the interior facing of the engine block. Hopefully I can get all this fitted tomorrow. Paul Erlendson

What a clever solution, Paul. You are one of the best. This looks really good and if you didn't tell and show us, we would never see or know what you did. Just like this year's Indy 500, give 33 teams the same problem to solve and look at all the different ways they went about it. Your solution is masterful. Thanks, Jim

With Calvin gone for the week we'll all have to step up our game to fill in the slack caused by his absence. In trying to do my part, I finally got back on my Eagle and got the 7 pieces of the gearbox glued together. After the problems with the block I was a little concerned, but no worries. Fit together perfectly. Paul Erlendson

Paul, that looks really nice. The bare metal is impressive as is, glad to see that the gearbox assembly went smoothly. What's next to work on for this build? Jordan Thanks Jordan. I think that I'll be sticking with the engine and transaxle. Looking ahead in the instructions, I've got a few more parts to add to the transaxle and then I'll get it ready for painting. Engine wise, I'll start on the cam covers and working on the block with different grades of steel wool and maybe 3M green pads. Then I'll try some washes on it. After that it's on to the fuel injection system and the other various accessories that fit on the block. This engine is a kit in itself! If I feel the need for a change while doing all of that I'll start prepping the metal chassis parts. Paul Erlendson
