For a number of years I’ve known that Can-Am Cars had the 1974 David Hobbs Carling Black Label McLaren M16 C/D and that they n the process of restoring it. I recently saw something that led me to believe that they were nearing completion so I checked their website. They’ve got some photos up and here’s the link. I'm thinking that it's on the list of historic cars that are appearing at Indy this month. www.canamcarsltd.com/car/1974-McLaren-M16C-6-Indy-Car-In doing a little more research on the car I discovered this article written by Hobo in the July 1974 issue of Motorsport. www.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/article/july-1974/29/hobbs-brickyardPaul Erlendson

Good article. A little proofreading might have made it great :-)
Will be good to see the car at Indy again, Walt. Hope to see you there!

Thanks for the link. Another example of how the Europeans always looked down their noses at Champ Car racing as they didn't even get anyone to proof read it. I went to both qualification days (and almost everyday of practice) in 1974. The McLaren team was of course one of the more serious efforts. Their cars were always turned out very nicely.
Hobbs was great. Always approachable, always willing to sign anything. Things were a whole lot different then. Most of the drivers stayed on the West Side. You would run into them at stores, gas stations, post office (a favorite of mine)

I'm assuming the "blue" on the upper tub in the first article photos is a protective wrap? It appears to be wrinkled in some places, --Frank

Good article. A little proofreading might have made it great :-) Will be good to see the car at Indy again, Walt. Hope to see you there! Jordan Right...how about the first line of the article...Few Britons have featured in the results at the infamous Indianapolis 500, with the notable exceptions of Jim Clark and Graham....ummm Dan Wheldon one twice, more than any other Briton.

Off course, I thought of that too, but the article is as published in July 1974 If anyone can get photos of the car, especially with the cowling off I would be very appreciative. Paul Erlendson

There was also this other Scot, name of Dario something, if I recall. :-) Also, the Brits did very well as car manufacturers. There's March, Lola, Reynard, Lotus, um, any others? MJ

Anyone know who the "well known" journalist was that crashed into AJ on their bikes, breaking ribs and puncturing his (the journalist's, not AJ's) lung? My first thought was Robin Miller, but that would be just too perfect.

Do they count Dario Resta's win in 1916 as British?
Also, Penske Cars had the most Indy 500 wins of any chassis until the Dallara domination of the IRL era 500's.

Do they count Dario Resta's win in 1916 as British? Off the top of my head, I think so, as well as George Robson. Wouldn't McLaren be included in British car makers? I know they started in NZ, but by the 70s they were based in Great Britain, no?

These are stunning photographs. Thanks for sharing them. They will be of help to some of us trying to get this build right. We owned a condo in Carlsbad, CA for almost 20 years and San Marcos was just next door so I feel some kinship. Hope the car is still at Indy in the morning. Jim
