Here's another little known car...after the debacle of 1935, Henry Ford locked up the Miller Fords in embarrassment ...Lewis Welch talked him into giving(selling) one of the cars...according to Craig, Ford stipulated that a Ford motor could not be used...so in May of 1938, the car showed up at Indy with an Offy on board...the entry was called Offenhause... Pictures are hard to come by...a right side shot would be worth it's weight in gold... Body will be black: suspension streamlining will be silver...wheels red... Craig sent this to me to keep me off the streets and out of the bars...so far, it has worked... Build shots soon... Tim

I can't wait to see your build. The Miller Fords are some real beauties regardless of the power plant. This is a gorgeous car!

This one is going to be good, Tim. I love that big, chrome, sewer pipe exhaust.

Might be OK on this one, Duane. It sure is not very near the exhaust.

this should be fun to watch! careful where you mount that steering box. duane Yeah, if you mount it too close to engine it will make the steering gears hot and expand and seize up.

I looked through some of my books yesterday to see if I could find a picture of the right side but no luck. It might be that this car ran at Indy as late as 1948. There was a point when some of the other Miller Fords began to reappear. Someone recently posted a site at IUPUI that had many old Indy photos. That might be a place to look. Jim

I know through the story of Donald Davidson that the old man Ford was not at all happy that they did this without his approval. He did not want to get into racing but the younger boys wanted to so they went through with the project. It is too bad because it was not about the motor it was the relation of the steering next to the exhaust that did them in. It was way too close to the heat of the exhaust. Scary to think of diving a car like that well over 100 MPH and no steering. I love the look of the car for the time period. Very sexy looking car.

One of the best looking pre war cars IMO. They have one at the Henry Ford Museum (or they did when I was there in 1990 or so)

Interior parts... Dash in... Also an interesting read in the 1938 coverage from Autocourse. Official History of the Indy 500 So I guess we can say "Nuvolari drove this car" , but not far... Tim

And "Black Beauty" rolls out for the 1938 Indy 500... The interior came out surprisingly well... Gary (GWS DECALS), Walt Schaub, and I came up with the right side logo, based on best guess...Walt says the logo was used on Offenhauser stationary... Walt also says this is the chassis that will carry the NOVI into the '41 race and finish fourth... A rather simple build, but still a few challenges...I'm still learning how to do photo etch... I need to take pictures with other cars of this era, because this thing is sleek, low slung, really different from other cars of the 30's... Again, thanks to Gary and Walt, and special thanks to Craig for the kit; it is much appreciated! Another beautiful Indycar of the 30's...thanks for looking! Tim

I really like this. It is an interesting project and piece of history. There were some innovative cars in the '30s. Can you share a little about how you did the dash? It looks like you drilled holes and mounted the gauge faces from behind. At any rate, a cool look for a cool car. Jim

This shows how low slung and sleek this car is...1933 winner on left and 1946 winner on right... This car was waaaay ahead of it's time...oh how lack of proper development can kill your chances at Indy... Tim

Is that a picture from the Jones Museum? That display looks fabulous! Even non-race fans would take that display serious.
