I've started my build of the Tamiya 1/12 Lotus 49b and I plan to build it as Jo Sifferts #22 1968 British GP winning car. Sifferts 68 car did not have the nose vents, so getting rid of them is the first thing to do. His car also had shortened front wings. This is after 2 applications of filler and I have modified the left wing. The kit was the motorized version, so the openings in the bottom had to be filled.

Great start, Mark. I really like F1 at this time, both the clean look of the '67 cars and the following high wings years. The 49 being one of my favorites in all variations.

Wow, I have plans to do the exact same car! Hopefully in time for the 50th anniversary of Siffert's win in 1968. I didn't realize that the front wings need to be shortened.
I have two questions about the car, as it ran in the 1968 British Grand Prix: - I have never really figured out about the finish on the exhaust pipes. With very few colour pictures available, some photos looks like the pipes were left as bare steel, but other photos show it as painted light gray. Do you know what the finish was? - Did this car run the Hewland transaxle/tranmission, or the older ZF box? Because the oil tank sits on top, it's difficult to figure out
Thanks Thanks and good luck.

The information I have is that his car was an early 49b with the ZF gearbox. (The kit has a ZF by the way) As for the exhaust I would assume that it was the standard Lotus practice... black pipes with chrome tips.

Chassis painted (TS-15), decaled and ready for the next step. I have MFH fuel hose and intake mesh coming from Strada Sports that should be here soon. As usual, Michaels decals are a wonder. I think the number stripe should be a bit farther forward, but I knew better then to try and force it.

That really looks good, Mark. Looking forward to the powerplant, wing, and wheels.

I need to repaint the wing, as I mucked it up, but the Lotus 49b is finished! I think the rear wing I sits too high compared to the photo in my first post, I may need to look at that as well. Not a great photo but I'll post better ones later.

In addition to starting the JS-11 build, here are better photos of my Lotus 49b. I closed up the nose vents and shortened the front wings. I used the front wing supports on the rear wing, but it still looked too high, so I lopped a further 1/2in off them. This kit was the early motorized version and the engine and trans are oversized and soft on detail. I'm not really happy with the build so I will probably do another in the future. Plus it had a bad set of front tires, but I had no other choice but to use them. I doubt they will last much longer.

Very nice! Great build! The wing looks good to me... As for the wing being too high, remember that the object was to get the wing as high as possible to get it out of the disturbed air going over the car. Those wings were banned at Monaco because they would have struck some of the over-hanging balconies. --Frank
