So here is another build I am working on. This model is on the left side of the board in the pic. The Ampersand kits are probably my favorite ones to build for several reasons... 1). the detail is decent but is not so detailed that they take a month to build, 2). the models are made by SMTS so it's a win/win with minimal flash and good detail, and 3). they are easy to assemble. What more could you ask for? This model gave me fits!! DO NOT use anything but white primer when spraying a yellow car. You will never get it to cover correctly. I tried it three times, having to strip it in Laquer thinner each time. The solution was Tamiya's white primer which finally solved all of the problems with the yellow coverage. Thanks to advice from this forum, I went with Tamiya Yellow #TS-16 and a top coat of Pearl Clear, TS-65... and WOW! Pennzoil yellow baby!!! Decals on this kit are challenging. Several long stripes to place which I got frustrated with. The decals were from 1986!! But they were not yellowed and went on pretty well. Of course I use Solvaset for all of my decals. Once all of the decals are on, I will do a final top-coat of Testors Wet Look Clear... again... a very light spray coat! Getting ready to finish the assembly later today. I'll post more when I am done.

Got most of the build completed...just waiting for my epoxy to completely set-up. Another lesson I am quickly learning is to be patient! Sometimes walking away and waiting for glue or decals to dry and cure is the best bet!

Looking good. Instead of epoxy, I use Insta-Cure and it works great. Dries quickly and don't have the mess of epoxy.

Yes. They have several strengths. I use the one that sets up in 20 Seconds.

Terry, can you please take a pic of your insta cure? I am looking online and cant figure out which one to get. I am about to start work on my Tameo Penske PC-17 for the '88 winner

Look at Insta-Cure on the internet and a bunch of sites will appear. I buy mine from Hobby Town. I use it on metals, resin and plastic. Works like a champ.

Here is the finished model completed about 15 minutes ago. (By the way... each square on the grid is 1") Overall I am happy with the way it came out. Best part of the build is what I learned while doing it... Now to get back to the 68 Eagle!

Crap! Just realized that I forgot to paint the fuel fillers!! Okay... not quite done... That's usually the way it works, as soon as you post a photo, you look at it and say "crap I never noticed that"

It is very impressive.I like particularly how clean is theaattachment of windscreen. When yo paintthe fule filler, beware: there's a revealing shadow that shows there's decal overlapping it a bit (or so it seems), be sure to fix that befor, or the paint might make an unwanted "scape". I think exhausts will also benefit form some hole darkening or something. Lovely piece!

Despite the unpainted fuel fillers, that is beautiful work. Bravo!

Looks great!! Nice to see 1/43 kits being built instead of being stored away in their boxes!
One question: where did you find this kit? I thought Ampersand kits were long out of production - is their a source for these, as I'd love to get my hands on a few??

Looks awesome, that's the day I became a Mears fan. Really good looking 84C. Don't worry about catching something in photos, it is amazing what we miss with the naked eye that looks so obvious in pictures.

He is the guy who started the company. He has inventory left!! I have been buying them on eBay for years. Picking up some more direct form Bo to round out my collection.

I am going to darken around the edges and blacken the insides of the exhaust pipes though. I thought about doing that and then said... "Naa... no one will notice... then came your post... Ha!

Next on the paint block is Mears 1985 85C. I want to get these damn Pennzoil yellow cars out of the way! I hate working with that color!

Just a shadow on the filler. Not decal. Thought I should warn, just in case! So no danger... I am going to darken around the edges and blacken the insides of the exhaust pipes though. I thought about doing that and then said... "Naa... no one will notice... then came your post... Ha! Hahah!!! Nevertheless, nothing beats the "live" eye. Maybe it looks fine like it is and it´s just the flash that makes it look (the lack of darkening) more obvious. Whatever you do, it'll look great. I am gonna post my first "completed" Indycar and it will look miles away from being even half as good... Hating the Pennzoil yellow? you rather seem to relish the challenge, I'd say
