when Salt Walther tried to make the show late in his career he had this big scoop on his car. Don't remember the year but they did load up a golf cart when they left the garage are which did not go over well.....

I thin I've seen Tunu UpMasters Penskes with extra scoop... the chrome may see an early pic por a promo photo shoot. Usually stickers are made from very early season pics...

I, too, had thought the chrome rollbar should be early in the year. The car is in full race paint which is why I thought it might have been for a race. However, I did look up the Phoenix and Long Beach races (only two pre-Indy races in 1988) where the car that raced ran a yellow rollbar. Hoping someone here can solve the mystery: is it from preseason testing, something run at Phoenix practice, or later in the season??

Not quite sure about the Phoenix connection? I probably misunderstand something. Nevertheless I always thought the PC 17 had a moulded rollbar, like the PC23 to make you an idea, not a bent-soldered steel plate one. Er... maybe the "proper finish" of the car includes a skin fairing made in fiber or whatever and the car just had lost it in the moment of the pic?
ED: OK, forget that. Just cheched, and even if it's less "plugged" than say, the Lola 87-88 roll hoop. it's not the smae league as Lola 93 or Penske 93, 94... You can see the same shape that you see in bare metal. Note the car has the PPG sticker, but Hey! it lacks the chevy badges on the flip-ups (how you call them?). So it's just a roll bar not yet painted. I'd bet for a pre season or early shake up, with typical PR photo shoot...

Those stickers were on the Mears' stand at Indy, and it's clearly a PC17. I checked the Phoenix broadcast and Rick has a yellow rollbar then, so it must have been a photo from testing before the season began.
The earlier PC's that got replaced by March 86c's did have a chrome rollbar so that would be where the idea came from.
I don't know when the air scoop came in but I know Penske ran it later in the season, on the road courses at least.

You have an eye like an eagle to catch that and not knowing that it is coming at that specific time. I imagine Hot shoe is correct that it was a promotional picture. Remember back than they were wanting these items as quick as the season started. I imagine the scoop was ran for road course and other races. There for sure was not one on the car for Indy.

I got pulled into the Youtube vortex for a little while there. It makes me remember how important this was to me back then.

It popped up in the little preview when you move the cursor over the timeline. So then I just had to nail down the specific time within about 30 seconds of video. And knowing the outcome, they were showing his pit more towards the end.

And since 1988 was my first time watching the 500, I may have watched this one on VHS a few times

I sent a message to Chuck Sprague, if anyone can give a solid answer, it's him. I'll let you know when I hear back.

I knew that first image looked familiar, but I couldn't quite place where. Then, last night in the garage I noticed among the various sponsor logos I have plastered inside the lid of one of my toolboxes is a decal of this very car - chrome roll hoop and all. I am sure I picked this up in early May, probably a qualification weekend I worked. Now, as to where the original photo came from I have no clue but would have to agree that it most likely was done as a promo shoot.

Here's the answer from Chuck wrt if they ever used that scoop: "Yes, we did. The theory was to try to pick up air that was not affected by the boundary layer. "
