Hi PAtrick,
Revisiting an older post here! LOL!! I found a 6 cyl engine to use in the Farrari-Bardahl and just need to scavenge a valve cover to make it right!
The Belgian D-50 (yellow!) is painted and I am just waiting for my lazy self to make the simple number decals to finish it. I used an old Strombecker glue bomb and it has turned out decent! I couldn't have done it without your help. Thanks!
I have a couple other '50s-'60s F-1 cars on the bench, and I will be doing the conversion to make a correct Alfa 159 soon. I have models set aside for most of J.M. Fangio's Championship cars. I am looking forward to having that collection built! Alfa, Maserati, Mercedes, and Ferrari! I recently picked up one of Herb Deek's old D-50 kits, and it will be the basis of the Champ car in that case. I also have a R.R. Stiletto 250F and the long nose D-50. Collecting the parts to build models since they are mainly slot car bodies.

Mongo, I built 2 Bardhal cars now. I made my valve covers using Evergreen plastic and bolts (plastic!) from the rail road side of the hobby shop. They looked great and could have been improved with photo etch Ferrari script. I no longer have posession of either car as my ex killed them. I just can't bring myself to build a third! A second MPC/Strombecker D50 has been sliced to become an 801 Ferrari...ah...new projects! Check out my Fotki site for photos. public.fotki.com/Katfud/mymodels/ Patrick

Hi Patrick, There are plenty of nice subjects (not to mention the great work!) to be seen on your Fotki account! I like a whole lot of them. I will take a picture of where my yellow D-50 is at now. I did the work to add the exhaust to the left side pod which is missing from the Strombecker kit. (why? ? ;D ) Just have to find (or print) some 20's to go on it! LOL!! (and find some spare mirrows *somewhere*.....) Mongo

Yeh, the missing exhaust port is somewhat crazy, no?
My glue bomb Vanwall with wobblies is nearing completion, too!

Well, as this section of the forum has been dormant let me add some progress I am experiencing. I recently purchased a Resilient Resins Ferrari/Dino 246 F1. If you are interested in the last of the front engined F1's then this body isn't bad!! I'll be working on it soon as my Matra MS11 V12 F1 and early Ferrari 158/64 are finished.
The Matra is a 1/24 Heller F2 modified with a bashed V12. The Ferrari 158 is the Cox kit. I now will have an early car(Race of Champions) and the Mexico GP NART car both driven by J. Surtees,OBE.
Concurrently with those cars I am nearly finished with the McLaren M25 F5000(a one off car!). I used a modified M16 AMT Indy car. The 5- liter Chevy looks great!
I was on a GT car trip for awhile and a Aston DB4/GT, and three 250 GTO's are nearing completion. (I need some Monogram 275P slot car wheek inserts, help!).
Well, that's the update.

Hi Patrick,
I had to get done with my youngest son's wedding and now that it is done, I can get back to work! LOL!! I have a couple of WIPs of Resilient Resins along with a couple old Merit kits/glue bombs; the '56 BRM and the Merit Aston which is a mint in box along with rebuilding a Maserati 4CLT. Also I am about finished with the Alfa 159 and the Talbot Lago. Having to do decals for all of them, though. I used Tamiya Sky Blue on the Talbot and it looks very good to my eye. I have not decided what to do with the RR Ferrari 246, but I have mated a Strombecker Maserati 250F chassis to the RR 250 Stiletto body and I think it will come out very good for a *shelfer*. ;D
When i get more done I will post some pictures.

I haven't started the RR 246 Dino yet. I'll do a P. Hill car( I did a Cooper T66-64, Phil's last year in F1. I'm a Trips fan also so I'm torn.). I'll try for the new photos on Fotki.

I am ging to start a Alfa 159 conversion from the Merit/Smer kit. Gonna use some of Herb's wires and see how everything comes out. When it rains around here, there isn't much left to do but build! LOL!!
Get my PM?

Hi Alex,
Did you receive your box? The Lotus is now a BRP F1 car that used BRM and Climax engines. I have done the Climax car of Innes Ireland. The Matra has some minor fit problems but nothing too difficult to adjust. I want to see the Lotus work you're doing. What are you going to use for wheels?

Hi Patrick. No, nothing. The wheels i'll use some that looks like the Lotus 33 (i think !), in fact, "my" Lotus will look like the 33 than the 25, i still don't know how, but i'm working. I need a lot of caution to not make a big mistake and damage the kit, very rare here, and also very, very dificult to find here. Cheers. Alex

Mongo,
I hope things are settled. I free from my schooling and am getting ready for some R&R in NYC. When I'm back I'll post some pix of my Lotus Mk18. Not exactly accurate, but not too bad either. The Hong Kong plastic is very brittle and snaps easily at the glue joints. It looks good as a generic R.R.C. Walker car of 1960. I like the idea it all started out as the nose of a Lotus Super 7.
I got bogged down on the McLaren M19 and Matra MS11 and put them away for awhile and approach them fresh another time.
Patrick
PS- Oh, I finally finished the Vanwall glue bomb, too!

Patrick,
I hope you are still monitoring this thread. I'm a bit of a 60's F1 nut myself which is primarily fueled by Grand Prix Legends, a classic racing sim covering the 65,66,67 and 69 F1 seasons.
I prefer to model in 1/20 to 1/25 scale, finding 1/43 just too small and 1/12 just way too big. Though, available kits in this scale range seem pretty slim. The 2 obvious offerings are the Tamyia Lotus 24 and Honda RA262. I also have a bit of a "glue bomb" model which I am rehabbing which is a Cox BRM P261. Other than those 3 cars, I am at a loss to find other kits which fit my criteria. If you could point me too them I would appreciate it. I am not into scratchbuilding or major kitbashing projects.
Regards,
Stuart

Not an expert I guess but GPL did spark my interest in this area of modeling but it is a lot of dead ends if you want to stay in the 1/20 to 1/25 scale range. Here is some stuff I found that you didn't mention....
Union/Heller did a Lotus 49B and McLaren ('69ish-not 100% sure) in plastic. Model Factory Hiro does several F1 cars in resin with white metal pieces but at like $280 each, you'd really have to like the subject I guess.

I just found a Union 49B that sold for $31 on August 12th. Damn! I just missed it. I also found a Union McLaren for $70 on ebay under the "Buy it Now". I think I will hold off on that and hope for a better deal. I don't like 60's that much to pay Model Factory Hiro's prices. BTW, where are you in Texas? I'm in Duncanville.

Hi Jordan,
About the Heller M7...yes, too pricey! I've seen them for $35-45...and a very nice kit except for the crappy tires. The 49B is great, too as is the Brabham BT33! Again, the tires are not so good. MFH has excellent tires for mid-70's prototypes that are great. All are 1/24. Also in 1/24 would be the Cox Ferrari 158/64 Championship car (I just finished my second, an early 1964 Surtees car). The Cox cars are somewhat bare with detail and the BRM nose is a bit too long (I found a 261 that raced in the US at a SCCA National race painted red running in Formula A!). By the way, the Cox tires are in excellent 1/24 scale for early Dunlop shod GP cars. The Hasegawa 1/24 Honda RA272 is the BEST! Tires are low profile Goodyears for late 65. The old 1/25 AMT Gurney Lotus Indy can be cut and bashed into a BRP-BRM Mk2/64.
Then, things get thin in 1/24 for F1...Heller does make a 1/24 F2/F3 Brabham and Matra that are sweet and the Matra can be bashed into a MS9 and MS11(nearly finished). The kit bashing really begins if you are like me and am an 1960-70 F1 nut in 1/24. Expensive hard body slot car bodies and Hong Kong toys are my focus now a days.
I have bashed Atlas Coopers, Eldon BRMs, Strombecker Brabhams, a Russkit Cooper 62 F1, and strange Mini Mite Alpine F3 cars have crossed my workbench. I am eyeballing a Marx toy Cooper T59 Championship car assembling parts needed to bash another Cooper (I have 3 finished and another 3 in the works.) and a Roxy toy Brabham BT44B (I have 4 Brabhams finished.).
Well, as you can see 1/24 is tough to work in for F1 cars, but my Strombecker Brabham BT7-Climax is my pride and joy of all that I've done. I am passionate about these cars and the drivers that drove them. Let me know how I can help.

I am really into the earlier part of the era. The 1950's front engine cars are my love in F-1. I have the Strombecker and Merit kits plus some others. I really don't get far into the rear engine category, but I do have some.
Right now I need to post the Belgian *yellow* D-50 (thanks for the reference, patrick) and a Merit Alfa typ. 149 and Talbot Lago. I am starting a conversion on a Merit Alfa to do the 150. Some changes to the body, but based off the 149. Then I am going to do the second version of the Talbot Lago. Minor but visible differences. Then I am going to finish up a couple of D-50s and on to the rest of my Juan Manuel Fangio *collection*. I have kits to do all his Championship cars, AFAIK! LOL!! I am planning on doing a detailed version of his Mercedes Benz 196 using the Strombecker kit and the 300 SLR '722' kit for the engine, suspension, etc.. Finally I have a Herb Deeks D-50 to do that one of JMF's.

I'm having a #*%&!!!!! hard time with the windscreen. I had it glued and it came off when I removed the tape. Then I re-glued and then the tape caught a part of the number decal! Arrgh!!!!!! I'm going to try again after some chill pills today. LOL I love models...so relaxing.

Patrick.......
OH BOY CAN I RELATE TO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went through many decals for just that reason...or the decals didn't conform to the compound curves of the body! I hate decaling! Makes to hobby so much fun! LOL!
best to you

Patrick: You told me you were the "resident Ferrarista." I'll bet Enzo is spinning in his grave that you made a model of a "garagista", particularly that it's a Moss car. Seriously, the Lotus is beautiful and a job WELL DONE. Tim

This is the cockpit of my Lotus 18 1/24. Where are the seatbelts? I've seen a couple old cars detailed with seat belts when the real car never had them! Glad to see you didn't do that. A little trick I learned is if you dab a little gloss clear coat on the gauges, it simulates the glass cover.

Yes, I just haven't gotten to that, but will, thanks. I'm on my 4th try at the windscreen (my better half said, "Just set it down for awhile.)...duh why didn't I think of that.
