Well, I'll try and get this started. I build F1,2,&3 cars of 1960's in 1/24 scale. I build Alpines, Brabhams, BRMs, Ferraris, Coopers, ect. Is there anyone interested in building models in this mainly scratch/kitbash subject? Please contact me.
My models are unique subjects and catch the eye of many modelers that recognise this unique time period in motor sports when drivers were really artists and not the commerical businessmen of today( That takes nothing away from Shuey's 7 World Championships.).

Patrick, well you got one here sort of. I'm really into the F1 champion cars from all eras especially the 60's but I prefer 1/20 to go with all those "modern" Tamiya kits.

A question, please!
What was the last front engine Ferrari to run in F-1? And is there a 1/25, 1/24, 1/20 kit out there of it?
Thanks! Bill

The last Front engined Ferrari was the 1960 246 Dino powered car dirven by the likes of Taffy von Trips, Phil Hill, Jean Bhera,Tony Brooks, and Cliff Allison.
The only "kit/ really only a fair body" is a UPC Ferrari GP advertised as 1/24 but really is 1/20! I bought one off Ebay adver'd as 1/24. I was disappointed.
Concerning the '66 and '67 Brabhams there are no kits of the BT19/20. The BT24 is 1/24 metal kit by Southeastern Finecast(?) or AutoKits or Will's Finecast. It is fair (I'm finishing one now!). The metal is soft and easy to work with with everything ok except the nose rides too high and it is slightly out of shape.
I am working on a BT20 ac-form body that I once made from an old Lancer slot body. It is coming along, but I really could use Lance Sellers' suspension from his Brawner Hawk. Anyway, my Brabham collection in 1/24 now includes: a BT7, BT12, BT18, BT20,BT24, BT32, BT33, BT44,and a BT49.
If you need 4-views try VSRN(a slot car website) as they have many, many cars of the '50s thru '70s.

Thanks, Patrick. I wasn't sure if '60 or '61 was the last front engine year for Ferrari. IIRC, the 246 Dino had a kinda resemblance to the F-1 Vanhall like Merit kitted. ( ??) Bill

Bill,
The Vanwall and 246 Dino F1s are similar only in o'all looks. Could you kitbash a Merit Vanwall into a Ferrari? Maybe, I've got a Vanwall and will check it out. However, a slot body company called Resiliant Resins does make a resin 246 in 1/24 scale. I haven't bought it ($19.00 bid) yet but the photo on Ebay does look very good. You'd have to come up with the rest of the parts. It is perhaps the best solution. I'll give the site's photo posting a try and show some things I've done.

Hi, I just joined the group and saw your post. The '60's F1 era was the best. Great cars, great drivers and the whole thing hadn't (yet) been mucked up by big corporate money. I really thought things were looking up when Tamiya and Hasegawa released a few 60's F1s (in 1/20 & 24 respectively), but sadly it wasn't to be. Studio 27 (I think) has a 1/20 sharknose Ferrari, but its very expensive. My kit wish list in either scale is for Any BRM, Lotus 49, Cooper-Maserati T81, Brabham BT19, and the Eagle (even though I have the Carousel 1/18 diecast). Patrick, how far along are you on the vac-body project? Neat idea using a vac body.

I have bought a few bodies from Resilient Resins, the most notable being the Maserati 250F Stiletto, and the long nose Lancia-Ferrari D-50. They appear to be a good starting place for a static build, and I am working on the Stiletto now. I was unaware of their 246 body. Bill

Hey guys,
Welcome Sandy. The BT19/20 project has the upper body shroud together and matched with the lower side tanks. Using a slot body( mine was a Lancer) as a starter because you also have the windscreen. Remember the Repco engine was based on an Olds alu. block so I'm in the process of studing the Repco heads to be able to repro them. I'm also collecting suspension parts( the MPC Gurney Eagle kit has a great upper rear suspension part for the Brabham's upper front suspension! The tubular chassis in my BT7 F1 was from a old Heller BT18 F2 kit, but I think I'll scratch the chassis with "Evergreen" plastic rod. I teach sixth grade here in Calif. so my time is limited on my projects. Sandy, I do hae a Revell 1'24 BRM P56 and an Eldon P261 projects. Interested in one of them? As to the Vanwall...well I would go with the Resin body(too much work to convert it! but possible. Gotta go and get ready for my crazy students.

Hi Patrick, Thanks for the info! So you teach 6th grade! I am retiring this year, my last day will be somewhere between 11 and 13 June. Official date is 1 July. This year I transferred to the *Alternative School*. It is grades 6-12 and s I teach PE (only one) I get them all. About 96 students a day is all, though. Believe it or not, my 6th graders and my 11th, 12th graders are my best students. My 8th and 9th graders are the *worst*! LOL!! I spent over 30 years as a Coach, and just got burned out. Way to much stress since I chose a path that put me in a rebuilding program each time I changed jobs! It was great, but it finally took its toll. I had a shot at proball in baseball and football, both. Flunked the physical first in football, and turned down minor league baseball. Bad knees and catrching didn't go together well. Plus being married! (back then you had to have an *off season* job to make it if you were in the minor leagues, just didn't want it bad enough when it finally came down to it, had to move on. Now, all these years later, the arthritis, and lingering effects from injuries is playing heck with my health. Finally reached the point that most of the discs in my neck are gone, and I seem to suffer from PCS, a factor of way too many concussions. And of course the usual diabetes shots and other aging ailments from abusing my body! LOL!! I certainly didn't *rust out*. Now, for model, I have been building since the mid '50s. I still have some original kits/built models from the '50s/'60s. I don't have a CLUE as to how I have kept them! LOL! This place is awesome, the knowledge here is phenomenal. We just need to get it more ACTIVE! LOL!! Thanks! Bill <><

Well, Bill,
I do know what you mean about bad knees. I ran track and cross country in high school and college and now, at 60, my knees ache alot!
Recently a friend gave me back some models that I began in the early '90s and I've been restoring them to completed condition. It's like finding an old friend after a long time has passed.
My main focus is building as many 1.5 liter F1s that I can make(I want to fill a grid of a race. I'm currently working on a BRP-BRM ('64), a BRM P263('65), and lovingly a Ferrari 1512('65).
What are you working on?

Hi Patrick, I think the worst thing I have going on physically right now is my neck. I have about completely lost three discs in my cervical spine! LOL!! They are just disappearing! And the holes in my vertebrae are closing up from arthritic build up......... boy, talk about a stiff neck! LOL!! Anyway......... I am working on the Ferrari-Bardahl Kurtis Roadster, and Mario Andretti's '86 Pole winner. Also getting ready to do the Blue Crown Special Mauri Rose winner from a Jorgensen kit. Plus a couple of Watson's. Thanks, Bill <><

Bill,
I understand the Jorgenson kits are well done. I've done the Bardhal Ferrari twice now(my ex did them in!) so I doubt I'll be doing another one( inline 6 engines are just too hard to get my hands on!). Good luck!

Hi Patrick,
I have spent so much time researching the pre-'70s NASCAR subjects that I am woefully lost when it comes to about ALL the Indy car and F-1 subjects. I wish I knew as much about Indy cars and F-1.......... that's where the wonderful people here come into play! There are quite a few Indy/F-1 models that I have really longed to build over the years. I am working on finishing up a few Strombecker and Merit kits from years ago. I had my first Strombecker Ferrari-Lancia D-50 right when they came out in the '50s. I have acquired a few of them over the years, ranging from NIB to built ups, but all are *fixable*. I am doing a series (SLOWLY!) of Juan Fangio's cars with Strombecker/Merit/Smer kits. Retirement in less than two months! LOL!! I have a LOT of projects to go, and since the Good Lord has blessed me with decent health, so far, I am looking forward to it with baited breath!

Hi Bill,
I recently did research on the Belgian yellow D50 and a pile of folks assisted with details of the car. First it was hand painted!!! The mirrors, cockpit interior, and the cockpit rim edge were left red. What a kick to have folks help with your projects. Congrats on your near retirement and enjoy your future projects. Just let me know if I can help in any way.

Hi guys, I can relate to all of y'alls aches and pains. Thirty years in the fire dept brings its share of bad knees and back pain. Truly though, my hats off to you teachers. You folks really don't get paid enough. My computers been down since before the weekend, but its back now(on life support!). Patrick, I'll pass on the bodies, but thanks. I've got a ton of on going projects among them or some 1/43 F1's and a 1/43 Andretti '66 Lotus 38 Dean Van Lines Special. This kit is by SMTS and released by Dog Leg Models. This was a car that didn't do much, but looked great! Any of y'all build 1/43 scale kits. With my old eyes I'd prefer them bigger, but theres a great selection of kits in this scale. Whos the guy that sells his kits on Ebay, Jorgensen or Sellers? I'd like to buy some of his 1/25 Indy cars, but being around at the time the bidding ends is often not possible. Once in a great while he has a 'buy now' option, but I wonder if he'd sell his others that way? Is he a member of this group? All the best guys, Sandy

Hi Lance, Thanks for the response and the info. You've released some real nice kits. Looks like I'm a little late on a lot of them. Hopefully you'll release some of them again. I'll send you an order for your Lotus Turbine kit this week. Patrick, Bill and Lance, After many (many) years of military modeling I'm getting caught up on car modeling and related info. And what a great help you folks and this site has been already. I've found some real good old race car sites recently. One of them, if you don't already know about it is- www.tamsoldracecarsite.net/ I thought about you guys when I found some nice photos there of Brabhams, BRMs and Lotus at the 1964 Watkins Glen race. Go to his 'New Today' section. What beautiful cars. Theres a lot of good vintage sports car stuff there also. Are there any Indy only photo sites? All the best guys, Sandy

Lance,
I didn't know you were the "Lance" of Sellers fame. I want again to thank you for selling me (some time back) the front suspension of the Brawner Hawk that I used on my Brabham BT7-Climax F1. It looks so good.

Hi Patrick,
Had to check in to see just what is going on on the '60's F-1 scene! I got sidetracked with building the Simoniz Spl., and I will be getting back to the F-1 kits of the late '50s and early '60s soon, hopefully.

Alexcarioca Hi Alex, and welcome to the group. If you are interested in scratch building F1 cars, I can suggest this site: www.rebeccasworkshop.com/Rebecca carries a line of paper F1 cars at 1:24 scale (and now some at 1:12). I have been using these paper kits as patterns to cut styrene. The results can be fairly good. For example here is a WIP of Brabham BT48 Russ

Hi Russd. Good idea, i have many of these paper patterns, but to scratchbuild a 60's formula 1,2 or 3 with styrene is another thing. If here in Brazil i could find more Olsonite Eagle and Honda RA 272 (1/24 scale) anda Heller Lotus 49 (i have one), i could use some parts to build others 60's formula cars. I friend in São Paulo use to scratchbuild these cars with soap box with good results, but he told me that is not easy and it is a little bore. Cheers. Alex

Its much better using a donor kit when scratch building these kits. I usually scan the eBay auctions looking for "junk yard" in the title/description (under modeling/auto). These are usually a great source of inexpensive bits and pieces (tires, engines, suspension, .... ). I have tried building a paper car, but I am just no good at it. RussD
