I am doing this build-up as an ARM display model for this year's upcoming shows. This was Leon Duray's (AKA George Stewart) rookie ride in the "500". Leon qualified 4th but finished 22nd in the race with a broken axle. The Jack Fox book lists this car as red, as well as the Ralph Mulford Frontenac lined up 5th next to Duray. As you can see in the shot of the starting grid, Duray's car is a much darker shade than Mulford's was, although both are listed as red.
The majority of builds of this kit are finished as the Gaston Chevrolet 1920 winning car. Therefore I thought I'd do this subject for a little variety.
BTW, you might notice that this photo of Jimmy Murphy's winning Duesenberg (with a Miller engine) sitting on the pole in front of Duray's Frontenac, shows something that I haven't seen before. The numbers are in a roundel with a painted outline around it. The roundel is clearly lighter than the car, which makes me believe the car was not a bright white, but something like cream or light gray. But that's a thread for another day!
After cleaning up the frame a bit, I pinned and test fitted the chassis components. As with the other Etzel kits, it goes together beautifully and is really enjoyable to build.
Thanks for looking. Tom

Knowing what I know about how colors photographed in black and white, it is nearly impossible that Mulford's car was red (at least not a standard red). Duray's car is consistent with red being photographed in black and white - film was not sensitive to red - thus it nearly looks black, as evidenced by the first image. This is why dark room developing was done under red light - it didn't affect the undeveloped film. Conversely film was VERY sensitive to blue, to the point that a very dark blue car could look quite light in a B&W photo from this era.

I've been making progress on the Monroe-Frontenac. I thought I'd try a little weathering on the wheels and tires. Most of the pictures show them to be pretty scuffed up. I worked on getting the engine prepped and set into the frame:

I was always fascinated by how small those engines were.

I've been making progress on the Monroe-Frontenac. Tom, I got my Fronty in the mail the other day and I cannot say how much I admire the work that went into it. This is a beautiful kit and your build up is inspirational. This is one of my favorite cars. pbh

I hope to get back on this build in the near future. I also plan to start an Imgur account so that I can restore all the photos on the forum..

Well, it's been a few years, but I finally got the time to finish this Etzel build. Leon Duray's (aka George Stewart) rookie ride in the 1922 500.

This model took "Best in Show" at the IPMS/No.Va meeting this month (Jul 2019). Amazing work. You have to see in in person to truly admire the finish.

What a wonderful build, Tom. Thank you so much for finishing it and then sharing it with us. Your builds really are special since you include a history lesson as well. I always found the shape of the Frontenac to be unique and distinctive much like Wilbur Shaw's Paycar. Congratulations on your IMPS prize. Jim

Faletti strikes again! Beautiful work on details and paint finish. You could put your Ruby Car beside it to show how much bigger Indycar engines got over the years. I also have one of these kits; let’s just say “it’s in the build pile.” Thanks for posting! Tim

I was instantly struck by the great job in the engine bay. Great work all around the whole car and there is something visually so distinctive about white tired Indy 500 cars.
