I just completed the car this morning, Gil De Ferran's Valvoline Reynard as it appeared at Mid-Ohio in 1998. De Ferran started 12th and finished ninth in CART's visit to Lexington, Ohio right behind some rookie named Tony Kanaan (I wonder how he turned out?!). He led five laps around midway in a race most remembered (by me at least) Michael Andretti's massive crash during which his car flipped. It was a bad day for him but a quite good one for Adrian Fernandez who won. De Ferran had a fair season in '98, no wins and a few podiums, finishing 12th in the season standings. Bigger things awaited De Ferran in future years. This particular car appealed to me for a few reasons, one I really like De Ferran as a driver and Mid-Ohio is my favorite road-course. I thought why not and this is the end result. I said it before but it bears repeating, during this time De Ferran came to Valvoline corporate headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky to do a sponsor junket and there that day was my mother-in-law who works for the company. She said De Ferran was an absolute gentleman, sealing my respect for the man. Now on to the technical aspects to this build. It's the Revell Target kit with very slight alterations. I added a camera to the roll hoop and cut down the fin according to how the Walker Racing Reynards looked. I dechromed the wheels in ammonia, cleaned them up and repainted them gloss black. The car is painted Tamiya pure white with Model Master Blue Angel blue with Speedline decals for everything except the numbers on the rear wing plates. Gary Sleeper made me some "5s" to accurately represent what the car looked like at Mid-Ohio and they look perfect. This was a fun build and I hope you like it!

Looks real good, Jerry. I agree about Gil, I got to meet him a few years ago, and he was just a super guy to talk to.

This is great! You did very well on this! Valvoline schemes are always attractive! I like the 'new' 5.

Jerry: Your collection must be VERY cool! I really enjoy your builds; you sure cover all the era's...concerning DeFerran, his personality is so laid back and he is such a gentleman that he often is overlooked for his driving...seemed to "come.alive" when the flag dropped...also beat Helio in a straight fight in the Indy 500...no small feat... Keep it up Jerry...I love the builds and the stories... Tim

Outstanding job on a tough paint scheme. Gil was always one of the classiest drivers around. The Goodyear tires were a major obstacle to success that year.

Thank you everyone for the kind words on the build. The Revell kits are a lot of fun and this one was no exception!
I have a few more in the near future I plan to build and I look forward to sharing those as well.

Very nice, Jerry, I like the look of this car. Gil was hampered by the Goodyears most of 1998 plus 1999, but I think that helped him by the time 2000 came around! I am excited about you building more of these Reynard kits. Can't wait!
