That kinda works out, because most Americans are not very enthusiastic about Bernie.

Good point Craig.....I'm sure Putin is just paying ol' Bernie more money. Plus here in the USA we just have way more selection of things to do at more reasonable price.....as for Russia I'm sure watching a Mercedes lead every lap and drive off was a thrill to watch at about $100+ a ticket or whatever the rip off price is.....

Bernie is the ultimate w**re, for a price, he will say, and do anything. His crap won't fly with most of us, so this is just one way of fighting back. Most series play favorites, because of support, and sponsorship issues, but we are much more subtle about it.

I just get upset when people think we need to be like the rest of world.

Pretty much sums up what Bernie is all about. He is perfectly comfortable dealing with thugs and dictators, but not places that won't put up with his garbage. I don't know by how much, but F1 will be better off when he kicks the bucket.

As I stated in the HUGE thread at Racer.com, Bernie is doing what he does best - blowing smoke up Putin's and Russia's a**. Of course I'm sure Bernie respects and admires the former KGB thug - just his kind of guy.
When (and if) he comes to the USGP, he will say he was misquoted and he truly loves America and Americans. More smoke. Blah blah blah.
If Bernie had any morals or scruples, he would have avoided any meeting with this war criminal.

I'll add my two cents...went to COTA for F1 last year and went to Texas LeMans the past two years...paid $1,000 for 5 tickets to walk around F1 with crappy seats in the far curves...this year sat on the front straight (covered) at Sports Car race for $60 that allowed you to sit anywhere (either hairpin etc.)...I had priced these same front straight tickets for F1= $1,800 each... THEREFORE, Bernie is an overpriced thug who has ruined F1... HOWEVER, the F1 stands were sold out at this ridiculous price and the sports car stands virtually empty...
Love him or hate him, he has made F1 what it is...rich...newsworthy...global...powerful...elite...but it is a rich man's sport priced far above any normal person's income... Tim PS: In person, F1 cars have by far and away the worst sounding exhaust...3 of the 5 that went with me said never again: too boring, too crowded, too expensive...a Cool looking Petonas MB hat was $75!!!!!...they sold a bunch!,, tj

This month's MotorSport has two photos in it that crystalize how BE (mostly, not entirely) has ruined F1. Go to pages 134-135 for the "Parting Shot" photo of the start of the 1963 French GP at Reims. There's Jimmy Clark motoring away from the next five cars on a long straight bordered by haybale barriers on both sides, and behind the barriers, in that shot are mayaby 2000 people taking it all in. Than, on page 17 is a shot of the Russia GP. One little car, lost on a curving section of track, lined by safety barriers and catch fencing with some huge space ship building in the background with bleachers in front of it that are pretty empty. Instead of French wheatfields, we have wide access roads, grassy plazas, huge flag poles and light poles, and hardly any human beings.
I get it, safety standards for spectators in the early 1060's were not that great, as was the case with the Von Trips crash at Monza in 1961, but the fun and interest has been sucked out of it for TV money and whatever money they can divert from backwater countries that would do better to spend the money on public health and welfare issues.
I used to think about how neat it would be have the USGP at Road America, but I'm way past that point now; it would ruin the place.

I would never take anyone to an F1 race unless they already knew what it was all about and I was able to be somewhat of a photograper....which I'm sure Bernie wouldn't allow that?
Ever since the new power unit car, I have really lost a lot of interest in the current state of F1.

After attending all but one LBGP when it was F1 through '84, my next F1 race was Phoenix in '91. By that point I think Bernie was well and truly in charge. Whereas at Long Beach, the tickets were reasonable, you could go in the garage and stand beside Piquet and Gilles and Lauda et al. At Phoenix the only way I could afford to go was my boss's father was a big shot at Philip Morris and I got them for free. We could only see one turn, had no access to any other spots and couldn't get within blocks of the paddock.
Really a miserable experience. Oh well, at least I can say I saw Senna race (and win). Interesting how they can treat the fans like pond scum yet they keep coming.

Scott, and I went to every F1 race at IMS. The Friday, and Saturday tickets were $25, and great seats (Paddock Penthouse) for the race were $150. When it was time to renew the contract, Bernie wanted to jack the price was up, and told Tony George to at least triple the ticket prices. T G said NO. I'm not a huge fan of Tony, but I was sure on his side on that one. From what Tim has told me, I have been to my last F1 race.

I think I've been to my last F1 race too. Too much $$$ for too little racing.

I went to my last F1 race in 2008. Having attended over 42 F1 events from 1969-2008( mostly 1-2 per year, missing 1975 and 1995), I have had the opportunity to experience the value proposition first hand from both a spectator and working with participants perspective. I have met some interesting people to work with.
Depending on what you expect from attending, I would have to agree the value proposition has changed dramatically. The true enthusiast experience has been undermined by stale ideas of commercial paranoia and over emphasis on elitism. If those that have traditionally shown the most interest start to drift away, then it's not long before those with a peripheral interest will have moved on!
I used to think that ALMS was excellent value, but the level of technology has declined in recent years, and paranoia about people looking at hardware has started to creep in, I would suggest tempering the real enthusiasts.
Currently, I see the best bang for the buck to be vintage racing! But you know, if vintage gets over embraced it too could follow a similar path.

I just got home from Austin. Had a great time. Was it expensive? Yes. Is it what I like? Yes.
The COTA is not very fan friendly for the common run of the mill race fan. This crowd had money. Palin and simple. I am lucky enough to have contacts and my lodging was free, three miles from the track. The reason I want was three fold. I don't go to Earl races. I got to see a bunch of friends. With the money I save by not going to Champcar races my budget for racing was in the black. Austin is a GREAT city. restaurants and art on Congress. Lots of music on 6th Avenue. Waterloo records (sorry resin guys, my budget got kind of blown!) Statue of SRV, the Museums, The "Bell Tower," The Senna display (underwhelmed, but if owned by one guy it was fabulous) Judd Larson's grave (hey it was in the neighborhood) Food was great, but the Stratocaster and SG players on Thursday and Friday night were right up there as well. Went to the oldest hotel in Texas, which is a ritzy joint and had a Chimay on draft. Talked with rich guys about cars. Got invited to tour the Duntov Automotive Group, which I took them up on. Very cool, some really neat pieces sitting around in their shop.
I had a great time. So did my party.
Saving money for next year and hoping for better weather.
Oh, and Vettel drove his butt off. So did Max. So did Kimi until he smacked the fence. If you don't want racing to go away, better go to an event.
2 ARCA races 2 Silver Crown Races 4 Sprint Car races 2 Midget races I Earl race (Indy 500, my hometown event) 1 Vintage event 1 Formula 1 event (USGP)
