Hello from Hoosierland. My name is Rex, and I stumbled on this site thanks to Google Images where I found shots of Patrick's work on the Tony A2Z Eagle (more on that later).
I'm 62, so as the saying goes I grew up getting to see all the good bands and that also applies to the racers and cars. Probably no surprise my introduction to open wheel racing was via the Indy 500, but more so my dad's interest in the Lotus-Fords. That led me to become a Dan Gurney fan, which in turn led to becoming a fan of F-1 and road racing in general.
My modeling started with some very basic airplane kits, but later shifted almost completely to racing cars. I've built more kits than I have time to remember, tried my hand with varying degrees of success at modifying kits, and then gradually got away from modeling altogether even though there are still a few un-built kits in the closet.
One such kit is what got me here. I have a couple re-issues of the MPC Olsonite Eagle Indy car I've had stashed away for years. I had the kit many years ago when it was first issued. Started the build but never really finished it until the mid 70s when I got the bright idea to turn it into the Formula A / Continental / 5000 Eagle-Plymouth Swede Savage put on pole for the 1969 season ending race at Sebring. After months of tinkering, painting and repainting, I had something that wasn't too far off. Time, various moves, etc. took its toll and very little of that car still remains.
I had been searching for photos of the Savage car, and F5000 Eagles in general and up pops Patrick's (re)build / resurrection and I got inspired. Out came one of the re-issue MPC kits and I am slowly starting to get back into it. The more I look at the work you all have done, I am both awed and inspired. Not sure I will ever get my Eagle back to what it was back then much less as detailed and professional as the level of work I see here.
Sorry for the long winded intro. I'm a writer by trade.
Rex

Glad to have you here, Rex. I seldom mention it, but I'm also a Gurney / Eagle fan. I never would have guessed! You should consider an avatar that reflects that interest.

Great to have you here, Rex! Always room for another Dan Gurney fan, and using Patrick as your building guide shows that you are, indeed, a smart Gurney fan (just look at your taste in models!). Again--welcome. You'll enjoy yourself here... --Frank

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. In the past few days I have probably spent more time snooping around than I care to admit. The WIP posts are truly awesome and inspiring to one who have been away from this hobby for so long. I am hoping to soon start my own WIP post on the '69 Formula A Eagle project I mentioned.
I will say that my time here has already changed my approach to modeling. I have been taking a lot more time sourcing through all my accumulated loose parts for things I can use as I had some decent dive planes and rear wing, determine what I might still need to source, and researching any photos I can find (which is proving harder than I thought). I have been carefully trying to remove the crappy top coat of paint I put on the car that ruined my first effort with this.
Please excuse what is probably the first of many stupid questions, and I'm not sure if it belongs here or in another sub-forum. In reading through many of your WIP post I find that a lot of you have found a source for "custom decals." I think most of my sponsor decal needs I can get from Michael and Indycal, but there would be some lettering I would need to finish the car correctly. Where would someone go for that?
Thanks, Rex

At the top of every section is the announcement section and there is a thread of Aftermarket Vendors with websites, etc.

It's GWS decals. Gary has a Facebook page, the website no longer is up. You can reach Gary at 214 402 3640. He is just a super guy to deal with. As you know, Michael does super work, but for custom work, try Gary.
