Graham Hill's BRM P-48, late in the 1960 season in a non championship race at Brands Hatch where he finished 2nd in the V Silver City Trophy. Brands Hatch, August 1960. (Jack Brabham won in Cooper T53). One of Dave Jones excellent bodies, still unpainted, but all the surface imperfections, and rivets have been sanded out, (and yes I have the fiddly little windsheild, which I've lost 3 times). All ancillaries are completed, rear suspension constructed out of square brass, and aluminium tube, and the exhaust modelled in my usual fashion out of 1/16" plastic rod. All three disc brakes turned on my "toy" lathe, yes the front one's too, now I'm searching for the correct inserts. just waiting for paint! Chris Photo's courtesy of Getty Images.

I tries to buy a 1/24 fiberglass body of a P48 from a chap in England, but he wanted too much for his painted body. I wanted to add it to my BRM collection, but alas! I wish there were more choices in 1/24 like you have in 1/32!! This looks so nice. Thanks for showing your progress! Uh, what about the body color!!!

Patrick RS Slotracing?...Yeah $100 for a painted body is a little steep. But is does contain: BRM P48 1960 Painted Resin body kit of BRM P48 1960. Painted body. Complete with driver, steering wheel, wheel inserts alloy wheels and Ortmann tyres. Colour? BRM Green, Tamiya British green with a mist coat while wet of dark metalic blue Chris

What this brake rotor: I would suspect it was an attempt by BRM to reduce unsprung weight, both the P-25 and P-48 had them. And this toy lathe: Cheap and chearful, but comes in handy making wheel inserts, and modifying stuff. Is that what they call a "Chapman Strut" on the BRM? If so did it come out before Chapman's? Also the brake on the trans looks like what Ferrari did mounting the clutch on the 275P. Very interesting (in the words of Rowan & Martins Laugh In). Thanx, John

That was 1957, the BRM P-48 was a 1960 car, the last of the 2.5 Litre Formula.

The BRM P48 was a Formula One racing car raced in 1960. It was BRM's first rear-engined car. With rear-engined cars in the ascendancy, BRM hastily reworked the front-engined, now five-year-old P25. The car proved to be slow and unreliable, and was replaced by the P48/57 the following year. Aside from the placement of the driver and engine, the P48 was mechanically the same as the outgoing P25. It featured the same 2.5 litre straight-4 engine producing 275 horsepower. The P48 also featured a single brake disc at the rear mounted directly to the gearbox. The rear bodywork was cut off to aid cooling, which exposed the unlovingly nicknamed "bacon slicer" rear brake. During 1960 Tony Rudd designed his Mark II version of the car, with a conventional 2 disc rear brake layout, simple rear wishbone suspension and a much lower profile. This resulted in a much better handling car, and for the 1961 Formula One season BRM based their chassis designs on the Mark II. (this car has yet to be modeled by anybody). Progress on the P-48. Almost finished, just needs a Immense Miniature's Graham in the cockpit. The wheels also need to be painted silver, and some better Dunlop style inserts. Also notice the addition of the "knock-off's" on the front wheels, they're some photo-etched units I picked up years ago. The decals are Indycal's rivets, and Scale Auto numbers. Rear disk brake still needs some bold detail and the exhaust some weathering.

Chris, This pic is from the Marconi Museum, this BRM was entered in the 1966 Rod & Custom Races by my Mom, Dee Hale, it featured quite a bit of engineering like a fully articulated ( steerable) front suspension and a variable differential, it used a pitman motor and was pretty detailed. It finished second in the Concours ! I remember her building this and although she is a world class artist she really sweated the details.. it now resides in the L.A. Slot Car Museum.. Chris

Absolutely incredible Chris. Back in the day it was so much harder, because of the limited availability of decent materials. That's a very clean build.

Yes, My Dad , John won the Concours series in those 66 R&C races with several amazing cars, as a Master Model Maker he entered the Cox prototypes Chapparal 2D, Ferrari 206sp and then a Pacesetter (Gurney ) Lola T70 etc, all slot cars but great models. Now as I consider myself a Master Model Maker it goes to prove your point..
