Okay, everyone knows I am for the most part a 1/18th scale geek. I was on EBAY and was looking for a driver figure with arms raised in the air to go with my Graham Rahal Fontana winner replica. I came upon these really cool and really detailed driver figures by a company called McFarlane so I grabbed a few. When they arrived much to my surprise they were huge!!! They stand 7" tall and way out of scale for my original intended purpose. After a while I got to thinking, what can I do with these huge figures and I decided that what the heck. I could still do them as Graham Rahal race winners. Just in a much larger scale! The figures are a pretty good likeness of the Nascar driver they originally were trying to represent. The closest one i could find that looked anything like Graham was a Tony Stewart figure arms raised in the air. My main problem is that Graham was wearing a baseball hat and the Tony Stewart figure was not. So, I had to do some modifying and cut the baseball hat off a Matt Kenseth figure and modified Tony's head to accept the hat. I then used an old 1/12th scale helmet left over from my 1/12th building days and painted it up like an Ohio State football helmet. So here you have it. A 7" tall Graham Rahal standing figure with helmet depicting his win at Mid-Ohio. I will do his Fontana winning figure soon! BTW - The figure is hand painted and 90% of the decals came from Michael's Graham Rahal Indy 500 decal sheet. The rest I did on my Inkjet. Stu

Stu, amazing as always. I guess I've never paid much attention to Rayhal's driver suit this season. Simulated bow tie? We don't have Steak and Shakes in Idaho, so I've never been in one. Does his suit replicate what the employees wear?

Hey Paul. I think it is. Kind of like an apron thing I guess.

Yep, Paul. That's pretty much like what the staff wears. Really a cool idea. I saw that at Indy, and really liked it. So, Stu, are you going to build a car in that scale?

That's so cool Stu! Mcfarlane has some of the best Action Figures out there. In high school I was a big collector of his Spawn figures. I've sold most of them already. Just kept a few. His nascar figures are very cool. With all the celebration poses. I wanted to do this with my CDW Wilson car but like you said they're huge.

Mcfarlane figures are really nice. I have a ton of the baseball figures and a few football. I even customized one as myself in my high school baseball uniform!

He wore the Mi-Jack suit at Fontana, can't wait to see that! Different pose for Fontana?

Stu,
Great job on this. It is a stunning likeness of Graham. I bet he would love to see himself in plastic. I was going to try to do the same with Scott Dixon's championship winner circle pose. I have a question. Did you strip the figure paint off or just repainted the figure? If you stripped the figure down what did you use to strip the paint off?

Sorry, just saw this. I did not strip him 1st. The figure got a good wash down with soap & water and then primed. I then sprayed the white base coat and hand painted all the black and the red stripes. After decals I put on a coat of flat clear. I remove his head and hands before doing all this and then glued them back in place.

Here is my Fontana winner. I found some silver stars at JoAnne Fabrics so I painted some of them red and some blue so I could somewhat recreate the confetti from that win. I then made some decals for each race win figure and put them on the base. Please excuse the paper towel background covering up the mess on the work bench behind the figures. LOL

If you're not going into JoAnne's, you're missing a lot of great modeling supplies! Go to the needle section and check out the doll needles--rear radius rods for '60's Lola and Lotus, chrome without the mold lines! The bead section will yield intake stacks with just a little work, and check out the wire section, too! They used to carry hex-shaped beads that made great bolts and jam nuts (they were on clearance when I bought several packs, and I haven't seen them since). They have thread there that looks for all the world like braided hose. I've seen a lot of men in JoAnne's. They can't all be model builders! --Frank

I forgot to congratulate you, Stu, for making some great silk purses from sow's ears (an old colloquialism). They certainly look like Graham Rahal to me! --Frank

Thanks Frank. I also buy ribbon from there for my seat belts and some dry transfers in the past. Bought some soft flannel fabric that is great for waxing/polishing to. So many other possibilities.
