Since finally retiring (2nd time) I need something to keep me busy so eBay and me have become very good friends which leads me to my problem: I've been buying every IMC or AMT Lotus 29 I can! I think I have enough now to where I can make models of the more obscure 62-67 Indy cars. The nice thing about the Loti are most Indy cars of that era are clones of Colin's or close enough that many parts can be adapted. I want to do Thompson's skates, Halibrands, Watson's, and Eisert's. I've been a sports car nut since 1963 when Mid America Raceways (MAR) opened outside my hometown of Wentzville, MO. Thankfully, my late brother Chuck shot many slides of races between 1963 and 1975 which I just inherited and I want to put on a website, he also shot the ARRCs at Road Atlanta from 1970-1975, if you are looking for a particular car from that time let me know and I'll see if I have it. I raced slot cars as a kid and Jim Hall, Hap Sharp and Roger Penske were my heroes. Jim Hall would send me autographed photos, and Chaparral T-shirts most of which I still have. John Mecom's Grand Sports, Lola GT and Scarab also my favorites. I'm glad to get back into modeling hope to post my glue stained efforts!

Great to have you here. Lots can be made from these kits and recently the aftermarket has exploded with improved parts and parts for various years. Come back all the time and enjoy other builds while sharing your progress. We would love to see your brother's work, too, make sure you share a link to it once you start putting it online.

Welcome! For years I've used Loti as the plural for Lotus. Recently I read that Colin Chapman preferred just Lotus, both singular and plural.

I see there is an AMT Michigan Speedway Lotus 38 (on box top)on eBay ending Thus Aug 20th. Looking at the attachments it appears to be the same old Lotus 29 but the decals are cool but I am confused. Looking at my old magazine collection it appears Michigan Speedway didn't hold USAC Indy cars until 1967 or 1968 so were there any Lotus 29s, 34s or 38s at the inaugural race? I Googled Lotus 29 and 38 images and also consulted my library, can't pull up any reference for the decals for car 44 or 38,can anyone clear this up. Jerry Hansen used #44 but I don't see him driving a 29,34 or 38. I don't need another Lotus 29 (never say never) but would like a Monogram 38 body or a set of AMT decals for the Michigan Speedway kit.

I'm guessing that was a special promotional issue commemorating the opening of MIS. I have never seen that packaging before. For a Lotus 38 you want one of Lance Seller's kits. AFAIK it's the only accurate kit made of the 38. The old kits are 'nice' but the stuff Lance and Kevin Kuzman are doing are incredible (Lance is coming out with a 72 McLaren and Kevin recently did an 83 Lola and is working on a Shadow Can-AM car). Calvin - Chaparral2k - has some great stuff like the Penske PC18 and the DW12, and in the past has done (and will again) the 82 Wildcat, and 83 and 84 March. With Calvin's help, I'll be coming out with a full-detail Marmon Wasp, hopefully before the year is out. For decals, I have something like 400+ different cars (Indy, F1, CanAm, F5000) that I offer. (I also make correct tires for the Lotus 29 as well as offer an 'upgrade kit' with new nose, tires, and windscreen which is a collaborative effort between me and Calvin.) If there was any Lotus 38 at MIS, I'm sure it would have been heavily modified. But that's moot since the kit was a 29 which almost certainly would not have been used in 1968. I certainly wouldn't pay that going bid price unless I was buying it strictly as a collectible for it's rarity. I used to work at Artemis images about 10 years ago and we had film footage from that first race at MIS - it was pretty cool to see, but sadly that archive has fallen into receivership and is not publicly accessible

I could not resist bidding on the AMT Michigan Speedway Lotus and won the bid. The reason why I bought it was to get the "Birdshooter" exhausts I need for Gurneys #91 DOHC "Mule" (also works good on King Cobras), the 10 slot Dunlop wheels will go on my Ferrari 330 P3 and the engine and suspension will go on my Lancer and Pactra 1/24 King Cobras. Its the decals that intrigue me, the #68 zig-zag stripes had to be on someones Lotus and I really can't find a reference. Christmas came early today and the postman, delivered an IMC Lotus 29 "Damaged" with tire melting but it was a good price and superficial melt. Also the EXCELLENT Aug 64 Sports Car Graphic mag with Bobby Marshman's Lotus 29/34 on the cover and in depth, also good reference on the McKee "Chevette" which only AMT did in 1/32 as far as I know. Also received the Lancer I believe 1/24 Huffaker Ford (pointed nose) and I believe a K & B or Lancer Andretti Brawner Brabham Hawk. Will post photos of the "Hawk". All in all a good day.

Received the AMT Michigan Speedway Lotus 29 NOT 38 as illustrated but I was very happy the box art is great and the decals very good, had some extra IMC wheels and tires, the 29 pieces will go to a good Indy project or my series of Cooper King Cobras. Last night I put the IMC Ford GT Dunlops on the IMC Lotus 29 wheels for my Gurney #91 DOHC "Mule",look a little small (maybe) compared to the Firestone's but they are the nicest Dunlops out there as far as I know (wish Cox had treaded their slot car tires (always thought a stick on roll of tread would be good for slick tires). I think the AMT front-treaded tires look good as "Rears" but I need some nice fronts. As soon as I get a wired distributor I send a shot of the DOHC "Mule".

I'm a little late at this, but welcome to the forum. I don't think you can have too many Loti in your collection. --Frank

Oops I did it again! After successfully resisting the last month to buy ANYmore 1/24 Lotus (Loti) 25/29/34 or 38s I was ambushed today by a Strombecker 29 blue body only slot car. I resisted the upper half of the Strombecker Gurney #93 slot car for the last month on eBay but finally succumbed. The blue body looks pretty good actually. Appears to be a completely different mold from anyone else. Anyone care to comment about the nose profile (or any other perceived errors?) I will not make it into another 29 (famous last words) but would like to know of anyone else has done a Strombecker and provide any build photos. Buy the way, I've wired the spark plugs for 1st version of the IMC Gurney #93 (I will renumber to 91 and have put IMC Dunlops on) DOHC "Mule" engine with Webers and relocated the braced roll bar, moving the distributor and FI pump to the back of the cams, also added a shifter and rod along with a radiator pipe. I found a sheet of metal decal/sticker screens, strips and plates on eBay and the very narrow silver strips I put on the DOHC cam covers but with the bird shooter lower exhausts they can barely be seen. But at least I know they're there. Lotus's have become an addiction and I need to stop but I should be real busy soon when my wife goes to Hong Kong for vacation. Thanx, John

Nothing wrong with putting details on that no one else will see--you never know when you'll drop the thing while showing it to someone else! "Oh! Look at those hidden details!" they will say say, heard over you sobbing/cursing. I recently read an article discussing Loti, Lotus, and Lotuses: Loti are more than one flower. Lotus are more than one race care to (as cited before) Collin Chapman, and Lotuses is proper journalism when referencing more than one race car by Chapman's firm. No wrong answer! --Frank

Just picked up a 1965 Honda F1 1/24 slot car off eBay that was listed as part of an old Revell employee's collection. The body is really nice and is definitely Not the Testor's RTR or early (64) Lancer slot body. I bought it for the Revell cast 5-spoke wheels which are not NOT Halibrands as advertised but I think may be the Revell Genie sports car wheels which I thought were 4-spoke, anyone care to clarify? Also going to put the 65 Honda F1 slot car (body is actually quite nice) back on eBay (minus Revell wheels) anyone interested in buying before I do? Sorry, don't have picture, is there an easy way to post photos on this website? Thanx, John

Hi John, The Genii wheels were a 4 spoke pattern. I remember seeing the slot car on Ebay. I think it's a 1964 RA271 made by LS. I used one to bash a Hasegawa RA272 65 car and yes it is pretty good IMHO.
