I was at the Speedway Motel in 1975 when Ruby was JR's teammate at McLaren. Lloyd was driving the Allied Polymer McLaren. There was a meet & greet there shortly before the race.
After some brief speeches, both drivers agreed to take questions. My favorite moment was when someone asked Lloyd what would happen if he and JR were running 1-2 on the last lap.
Ruby grinned and said, "Either old Rube is gonna win or the guy runnin' third is gonna win". Rutherford was nearly apoplectic, expecting his supposedly subordinate teammate to say something a little more politically correct.
I'll never forget that moment and I thought of it when I heard of his passing.

Mr. Ruby will be certainly missed by all. Maybe Lance can reissue the 70 Mongoose as a tribute?

If Lloyd had won the 500 it would have been one of the most popular wins in Speedway history, not only for the fans but for his competitors as well. God's speed Rube.

Having had the pleasure of sitting and talking to :"Good Ole Lloyd" at the Speedway, I can say, I will miss him like I do Rodger and Troy. Lloyd was always good for a laugh and a story.
He may not have won on the track at the Speedway, but Ruby was a master and multi time winner playing cards with the other drivers. If not turning laps, Ruby was playing cards.
My favorite Lloyd story he told on himself was during the 1969 500, he came charging through the pack after starting 20th to lead the race. Ruby was driving the race of his life just to lead. Danny Laycock, his crew chief gave him the "P 1" board sign meaning he was in the lead......Suddenly, here come Lloyd into the pits thinking the sign meant 'pit in 1"....Thsi was before on board radios in cars......The pit stop was going great, even for the shocked and surprised crew. Laycock, the so of Bob Laycock, was in front of the car ho,lding Rudy back. Ruby was watching him and John Laux.....to wait for the signal to go back onto the track....Laux was trying to get one of the crew to hurry up by making a "hurry up motion". Just then the car came down on all four tires, Lloyd sees John making a hurry up motion, and puts the car in gear...not realizing the fuel hose was still connected to the tank and thus, ripping the side out of the car! Fuel was spilling out all over the pits......soon the car sat in a sea of racing fuel. Lloyd just sat there with his head down, knowing his day was done hile everyoe of his pit crew was waving their arms for Lloyd to get out of the car. When asked, why he didn't jump out of the car surrounded by racing fuel.....Typical Lloyd Ruby is his very thick Texan Drawlslow stated, "......OOOOOOOOOohhhhhhhhhh weeeeeeeell, what difference it would have made then. They should have lit the damn thing on fire with me in it...."
He was a class act....We lost a great one today.
Best to you all,
Russ

Don't forget Lloyd was a pretty good road racer too - 1966 winner of Sebring and Daytona 24 hrs and was scheduled to be Ken Miles team mate at LeMans in what was the true winning car that year.
