Wow!! And then, Wow again. Thanks to Lance and Walt for getting these close-ups; they are really great and show so much. Does anyone know why they lengthened the tub? Jim

If you remember when Lotus was going to run the BRM h-16 engine at Indy and the engine never arrived so the made a frame to hold the Ford 4 cam engine. Graham hill said the car handled better than the Lotus 38, so the Lotus 56 Turbines were made with a longer W/B. The rules back then controlled the over length of the car, not the W/B, Example the 71 McLaren had a longer nose with the rear wing mounted on the rear body work, But in 1972 they were allowed to have the rear wing separate from the body so McLaren moved the rear wing back but had to make the nose shorter to meet the rule for overall length. A J Watson may have thought with the 68 eagle's short nose that they could make the car longer and It might handle better and from the way Mike Mosley was going in the race they might of had the right idea except for the wall outside of turn 4. This car was not the car Mike hit the turn 4 wall with in 1971.

Thanks, Walt. I had forgotten about the short nose and rear wing placement experimentation. Indy was fun in those days while they tried to figure it out. Jim

It all has to do with the center of gravity and the center of pressure.

eagle36, very good article, thanks for sharing it. You're welcome. I just found this magazine recently at Barnes & Noble, and bought the last two issues. Fascinating how technology is in vintgage racing.
