Well, I haven't been around for a while, been working on a couple non-Indy projects. Decided to go with this one for an easy build. It's going to be all box stock, provided I can keep the decals together. Anyone got color suggestions? The only pics I have found of this car are of diecasts, seems to be a dark red. Decals don't seem to be real accurate, so I probably won't worry about the shade of red too much. The tire halves, engine halves, and main body halves are now together. At this point tires are ready for paint, and the engine not too far off. Need to get some putty to fill low spots on the underside: And here is an early mock-up: Like I said, it is rather simplistic. Thought about doing some detail to it, but after the Vega and Chevelle projects I needed something easy to work on. And it would take a whole lot of work to make it more accurate. Still, it is a neat little kit, and rather old school. Thanks for looking. Dave

Hi Dave,
That kit lends itself to SO MANY (!!) different cars with very little mods. I really like that old kit (I actually got one back in about 1959 when it was first released!) and I have a few under way right now. ;D
Good luck and keep the pictures coming! Mongo

Thanks Mongo! I think I may have to get at least one more, depending on what decals I can find still out there. Got a couple of ideas today for improving the appearance of the kit engine I'd like to try out.

Hi Dave,
Fred Cady is retired from printing decals, but he still has some old stock available. I do not have his contact info handy, but Russ (oldcalhoun) does as well as a few others here. He might just have some for the Kurtis cars and a few others.

Here's the Indy car section of Cady's catalog he sent last year. He still has some decals for Kurtis and Watson roadsters and there's plenty of room for someone to do some new roadster decals- hint...HINT! I believe Russ posted Fred's shipping and current price info awhile ago on this board. HTH, Sandy The address is- Fred Cady Design P.O. Box 576 Mt Prospect, Il. 60056

Got a little more done to this one: Messed up one of the rear wheels, so had to redo the black. Will repaint the silver tomorrow, and paint the backs of the wheels. Also filled in the seam, and most of the waviness on the bottom: Had to use flat black, all I had at the time. Hope to wetsand and shoot some primer tomorrow, and definitely retake the last photo! Overall this is a fun little kit to work with, and am seriously considering another to try some detail work on. Thanks for looking!

Got it painted, and the driver figure as well. Let me know what yall think of the color, I've not been able to find any color photos of it: Going to give it a few more days then wet sand and polish it. Dave

Yeah Mongo, I'm planning on using those. I really wanted to keep this all box stock, except for filling in the seam. I think I got it smoothed out pretty good, except for the bottom. Had quite a bit ghost back out. going to see how bad it is after sanding, but don't have any plans for redoing the body. Like I said, I just wanted a quick, OOB build for the shelf and that won't be visible sitting there anyway!

Little update: Wet sanded and polished, but the paint acted like it hadn't fully cured. Don't think it is ruined, but will give it some more time. Burned thru on the hood anyway. Let me know what you think. Dave

As far as decal options for the Kurtis, IndyCals only offers the '55 winner, right? Which ones of those Cady decals are for the KK? TIA

Fred Cady had a number of sheets for that kit. I have the Belanger Spl. sheet which includes decals for both the '50? and '55 cars.

Hey Terry!!!!!!!
Cady also did a sheet for the Agajainian Special Kurtis...You'll need to modify the kit though, not difficult.
Best to you

What kinds of mods Russ? This one is at the point that I'm gonna do my best to use the kit decals, despite the stories I have heard about that sheet. I have thought about it a lot, and would really like to build another one and see if I can make it a little more accurate.

Reading thru this post got me to thinking...so I dug out the decal sheet I have and found that 3 different cars can be built from this one set. A 1955 Cal Niday #22 Kurtis, the aforementioned Sweikert #1 car, and a 1957 #10 Johnny Thomson car. All D-A Lubricant sponsored, but the last 2 were Kuzma chassis. The Monogram kit could be used for these, but would need some work, in particular the large oil cooler on the left side of the car and the shape of the engine bonnet. If anyone here ever decides to build either of those cars, let me know. This sheet has to be more than 10 years old, but it's still in excellent condition. Tom T.

Hi Tom, What is Fred's *sheet number* on those? I would really be interested in getting a set. I was lucky enough to get the Indycals sheet for the '55 Hopkins Spl. of Vucky's before Michael could no longer print the orange, and I am getting Fred's Ferrari-Bardahl sheet, both models I am building. Along with the #3 Hinkle car (since Russ has built the #2! LOL!!), I am still itching to build a couple more! Thanks! Mongo

Got some more done to it. Decals are being a pain, couple of chips on the numbers. But, with some luck I'll be able to get the rest of them on without too much trouble. Anyway, here is where I am now:

Well, it's done! Done all box stock, except for the BMF on the grill and the rib on the hood. I really had a blast building this, a lot more than I first thought. Decided to keep it box stock and not worry about adding extra details or changing what was in the kit. Just build for the fun of it, and it was fun! Decals were a trick, between being over 20 years old and adding a coat of liquid decal film, but they laid down pretty good. Should have tried bagging and putting them in a window to try and bleach the carrier film, but oh well. Trimmed a little close in a few places, but managed to touch them up. Want to do another one now, and see if I can add some detail to it, but all in all I highly recommend this kit. Had hoped to take some outside pics, but the weather is just not going to cooperate! Thanks for looking.
