I know I'm probably beating a dead horse, but this build is so inspiring I have to bring the subject up again. With advent of 3D printing how hard would it be to produce kits of these cars? The list of drivers that sat in these cars is pretty amazing and as they helped launch so many careers in Indy cars their historical significance is undeniable. Imagine one of these with a 4 cammer stuffed into it. I'll step off my soap box now. Sorry if I stepped away from what is an amazing build, but as I said, it just ignites my desire to see a kit of these cars.

I am not sure but I would guess the late 1950s. By the early 1960s I believe they were using the lever type with shoulder harness, but did not yet have the belt between the legs.
I totally agree. While this project has been a lot of fun and a real challenge, it would be so nice to have a kit. Does anyone know a good donor kit for a 4 cam engine--John has sparked my interest?

Finished the mud screen on the nose. Soldered brass rod and brass screen. Roll bar and braces. Again, soldered brass rod using Clindinst drawing as a guide. Will have to be painted white and some attachment points put on the braces. Yeah, I know. But these are such cool cars. Years ago, I saw the Silver Crown cars at Hagerstown Speedway. They were modern dirt cars, but they also had the old Joe Hunt Magneto dirt car there. Jack Hewitt did some hot laps in it. WOW. They interviewed him when he got out of the car and he was like a kid in a toy store. I love these cars. I am going to order a Big Donkey champ car with the hopes of doing a 4 cammer. kip kip

If a person want to see lots of Championship dirt cars spend the money and buy the Dick Wallen Roar From the Sixties book which covers every season in chronological order of the Championship trail.....from Trenton to Langhorne from Indy to Sacramento.....everyhting! Not just Indy, indy, indy, indy, indy!

Duane, as near as I can tell, most Champ Car drivers had converted to the 2" twin shoulder harnesses by '64. Foyt was wearing the Sam Brown belt in '62, but the shoulder harnesses in '63. Some USAC drivers were still wearing Sam Browns in Midgets and Sprints as late as '68. Don Branson was wearing both systems (at the same time, in the same car) in 1966. It would be interesting to know when USAC specified shoulder harnesses. spyder

Kip, Sorry I did not mention this in my post yesterday - your Meskowski Dirt Champ Car is awesome. You have truly turned a sow's ear into a silk purse. And set the bar higher for all of us out here watching. Keep doing good stuff. spyder

This one is done. And best of all it doesn’t tricycle. Many, many thanks to BobbyC for planting the seed to do this car and for providing the Garage 97 body that was the basis for this build (along with parts of the Big Donkey Champ car body). 2lapsdown also helped make this build possible. This car was built by Wally Meskowski and was first driven by Foyt at Sacremento in late 1963. In 1964 Foyt and the Meskowski won all five dirt track races. In 1965 the team won at Springfield and the Hoosier Hundred and sat on the pole at DuQuoin. In 1965, Foyt ran the car at Milwaukee against the rear engine Indy cars. He took the pole and led the race. A late pit stop for fuel eventually placed them second behind Johncock. The car was sold to Lou Senter in 1968 and was raced until 1984 with a Ford four cam and later a small block Chevy replacing the Offy. Its last race was at Eldora where it was driven by BobbyC. Don’t know how often BobbyC drove it, maybe he can help here with some history. So here it is. Body by Garage 97 & Big Donkey. Engine from ARM Rear Tires/Wheels from ARM Front Tires/Wheels from spare parts box and grooved for dirt. Suspension from here and there and some scratch built. Dash and cockpit was scratch built (seat from spare parts box) Seat belts are from Detail Master Mud screen, Roll Bar and Braces, and Rear Push Bar scratch built from brass tubing Decals by IndyCals in 1/25, 1/32, and 1/64 scales. Windscreen was vacuformed from a clay mold that I made. Thanks to Walt for photos, information, and encouragement. kip

Masterful work, Kip. Really great work from head to toe but considering that there is so much scratchbuilding and kitbashing makes this really even more insanely impressive! Super Tex would l-o-v-e it, I am sure!
