Time for my first project of the year! Building this one in honor of my good buddy, and 2007 Indy 500 ROTY, Phil Giebler. Phil was one of my first friends in racing, and the fact that we experienced our first Indy 500 together was pretty cool. Phil has always treated me like one of his friends, even in the years after his time at Indy. Phil was SO fast on that first qualifying run. It's a damn shame he had the accident, because I think his car had the speed to lead the race, just like Jaques. Not sure if it rattled his confidence after that crash, and never really cared to ask, but the same speed wasn't there (and arguably didn't need to be there). So, I'm building my first Panoz I like these cars so much, always have. They had a great shape, even if a little "chubby" in places. It's a shame development went away and they stopped being used. It was fun to see Penske/Ganassi use both chassis depending on the driver or track. Masking didn't come out perfectly on this, but when I cover it with the blue and then silver pinstripe it'll look just fine. Tamyia White, Tamyia Bright Orange (TS-31) and then the blue will be Tamyia Light Blue (TS-23) which seems to often be used for Richard Petty cars. Got my new workspace all set up during some warm weather a couple of weeks ago, have supplies, and I'm ready to make some more progress this year!

Nice choice! When it's done, I bet you'll be the only guy on the planet with a model of this car.

Building models that you were associated with is special. There is another member on here that I built several models for who worked with a few teams.

I remember this car. Earl Ma was a guest of Phil's at his last 500 just a week or two before he passed.
Nice start MP, will be watching this one closely.

Progress! Need to go back and touch up the orange in a few spots where it isn't sharp with the blue, and a few paint creep areas. 1/16" Great Planes Chrome Striping will be here in 2 days to finish this up. Then I've got to worry about decals!

That's a very interesting scheme! Doing the touch ups are not that big of a deal.....its pretty hard to not have bleeding....really the only way to avoid bleeding is to make sure it's the right type of tape and its pushed down into every crack and light coats of paint.

Striping worked great! I ended up getting this roll of multiple sizes made by Pactra for $12. 6ft of tape, 6 different thicknesses and lots of colors. Very cool! Just is coming up in spots. I read something about a hair dryer to help it stick, need to go back and read that again. Here is a quick pic -- sorry, colors got SUPER washed out from the flash in the dark room.

Had the same issue with all the pactra pinstripes I bought. I bought this small heat iron thing that works great. Will post photo later. Got it at the local hobby store.

Mike as soon as you get them laid down tight hit the car with clear to anchor them. I do that with my vinyl. Wash your hands very good before handling any tape to remove any oils off your fingers. Never handle the car without washing, clear may fish eye on the oil.

I use this and clear just like Ralph does. It heats and seals the pinstripes to the body.

Starting to work on some decals that I can do on laser. This is getting exciting again Camera ruins the colors -- I swear to you, the Orange and Blue are SPOT on "in living color".

Looks awesome! I know what you mean about colors changing after picture-taking....it sometimes takes a little bit of editing to match what it really is. Even the internet will change the color slightly if I'm not mistaken?

Hey, its only been 3 months, how about an update!? Well, this sat on the shelf in my garage for a while waiting for me to have time to make the decal sheet. When I finally got "unbusy" and went to work on it, I dropped the dang thing and destroyed the paint. No worries! Took it as a second chance to get the silver striping right. I went seeking the perfect masking tape, and found it! I scored some 1.26mm masking tape on eBay and it was FANTASTIC. I decided to stop screwing around with cheap paint that I never could seem to thin properly and went all out. Got Kustom Color paint for the entire car, from tcpglobal.com and I'm so glad I did. Stuff goes on so easy, dries so fast, I really don't think you can screw it up. Shot the entire car in metallic silver, masked off the silver stripes, then sprayed blue. Masked off the blue with regular Tamiya tape and shot white. This stuff covers EXCELLENT. One heavy coat of white was plenty to cover the blue and silver with no issues. Lastly, I masked off the white and shot the orange bits. Now, here she sits today! I've done all of the decals I can do from home, and Gary is working on the rest for me. My 1:20 scale Scale Motorsports carbon fiber came today and I was able to properly apply carbon to the underwing as it was on race day. My tire ramps are on order from Shapeways as well, but will be mid-September delivery This thing is far from perfect (not happy with the left side of the airbox and how thick the silver is but I will fix it), but it's far from sucking too! I added some silly little detail that you will probably never see, just out of boredom, such as painting the brake calipers with a gold/copper mix to emulate the Brembo brakes. Also painting up the front wing adjuster. Have the tires stripped and ready to have Firestone Indy 500 decals applied. All of this has come together in the last 10 days, and I'm pretty excited! Can't wait to put this one on the shelf, and then it's time to build another for Phil!

Looks good, MP. I like the new paint you used. Glad to see you got the parts ordered from Shapeways, I hope they work out well for you.

Shot of the decals, just for kicks. Had to redraw so much from this. Several sponsors were added on race day that I never did mockups for, so I never had the logos.

Sadly, this is the ONLY photo I've been able to find of the car during the race. They were adding decals on the grid! That's why the HI-TEC logos don't match on each side. One was dark, from the #21 car, the other was in the proper color for this car. Picture in first post is awful, so I figured I'd better post a better picture for comparison.

Have you tried the IMS Photo Shop, MP? I wonder if Earl Ma's took any photos on race day? He was a special guest of Phil's so he'd have taken some of the #31 if he took any that day.

Jordan He was, indeed. I'm sure there are some photos in that collection, but these were sufficient to get the job done!
