If you've ever built the AMT Penske PC6, you are probably familiar with it's double-element rear wing. Well, I was watching the 1979 race last night and during a Mears pit stop. something caught my eye... his rear wing. It wasn't double element and it was much thinner than the AMT kit. A look at his qualifying photo backed up what I saw on TV. Even the Penske replica has it this way - I've highlighting the actual contour of the wing so it is easier to see. So that is one more thing in a laundry list of things that kit got wrong, a few of which are: No side-pod fuel buckeye Open area behind the drivers head on the cowling Improperly shaped brake ducts (those white flip up things on the back of the side pods) No side skirts for the bottom of the tub Tub is too narrow No pop-off valve and now, incorrect rear wing Now the double element wing IS correct for 1978 - so technically the kit makers didn't get it wrong, they just didn't update it for the 1979 winner. Just something to keep in mind if you decide to build a 79 winner.

That kit was junk the day it was released. Hard to build to boot.
Parts only, wheels and Cosworth engine.

So Michael, can we look forward to new computer generated parts to make a more accurate '79 winner in the near future? It is a long neglected kit.

Does the kit need parts or a whole resin kit minus maybe rims and engine?

With the kit, the tub is too narrow. The engine cowling to nose cone is way to fiddly. Then the cowling itself is two piece so you wind up filling it and then sanding in some pretty difficult areas.
I have two of these built up in my collection, and am proud of them, yet a complete resin car in kit form would be much better. That being said, I would much rather have a 1977 Penske PC5/McLaren as the 200 mph barrier car and the other subject you could build are much more interesting to me. Sugaripe Prune Cars, Tom Sneva's Norton Spirt and Mario's CAM2 machine, Salt Walther's ride, the original Red Roof Inn's car of Vern Schuppan. I saw all these cars run, and they were good looking cars. The PC 6's were sold in second hand form to privateers as well, yet the McLaren/PC5's are better looking IMO.

I always want to try and build it, but then I look at it, realize it's completely over my head, then close the box and walk away. MJ

One more for the list, no doubt, though the main problem are major things such as chassis width. Yes, that problem kinda "I can only save the license plate" happens usually. I thought 1000 times to make a transkit for F1 Ligier JS11 and finally you realiza that just the name is what you can use Interesting what one finds out re-watching a ยก79 race, Michael!!
