Hello all, does anyone have any detail photos of the rear area (differential) area of the 1980 Chapparal? I know that there is something there besides a flat plate, but I just can't find any clear photos of it. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Howard Weaver aka Wrencher.

I think I know where Howard would like to go with this. I have the kit and for years I've been trying to figure out how to do the rear end without making a mess of it. These photos are great. I guess someday I'll just have to get my nerve up and go at it.

I'm with you, John, this has been on my to-do list for years. It's my all-time favorite car, so I don't want to mess it up either!

If anyone can name the races in 1980 they used and didn't use sliding skirts I'll start a detailed WIP thread on my 1/25 2k! Also if you can name the race that had my favorite bodywork for the 2k I'll put you first in line for my future 1/12 scale 2k kit. What a rip off game!

I am dying here. This is why I go nuts. I have this model from Bill Jorgensen finished years ago. If I go back and try to make all of my models correct, then I may as well forget about building any new ones. So, my mantra (sp?)is, that if it is finished, it is finished. I will try to do better on the next one. Does anyone else feel this way? Jim

Jim, I feel that way to a point. But the back of the 2K is begging for more detail. That blunt rear end just doesn't look right. Calvin, since you love this car so much, lead the way so Scott and I can build ours right.

I still have a dream of producing an overkill, overwhelming, overboard 1/12 scale Chaparral 2k resin kit. Then I still have that stupid 1/1 scale Chaparral 2k I started on many years ago. I'll tell you what...if Art starts a Chaparral 2k WIP I'll start one as well......

Ever since I picked up my copy of Scale Auto Enthusiast in 1981 I’ve been planning on building this car. The mag contained a wonderfully complete set of plans draw up by I believe Tom Gaffney. He was going to first build a curb side model and then a full blown detailed one, but it was never meant to be. From those drawings came the Ken Glen model that I got my hands on as soon as I saw the ad in Scale Auto. Vacuform plastic body and a very strange resin chassis that still feels tacky after all these years. Then I got a hold of a Formula 1 1/43rd scale kit which is just outstanding. Finally Bill Jorgensen’s model and I started looking at how I really wanted to build it, or how I really wanted the kit to go together. Bill’s kit cries out to be remastered to go together more like Calvin’s Penske PC18. Maybe then after 35 years, I’ll finally get around to building it.

I'm not sure how the Pearl is going to work out, but I believe the original paint had a touch of pearl in it. So we'll see...

I have the attached info on the paint color here. mb2501.proboards.com/post/51332This is one thing is what makes the paint color tricky on the Pennzoil Chaparral is the special PPG Yellow used on it as these papers call it "metallic marbling yellow" Its for sure not just plain yellow but it has some bling to it....to what extent its hard saying....I know the later Pennzoil cars like from the late 90's really had a lot of pearl to it which IMO is WAY too much for the Chaparral 2k paint job. I was planning to do some kind of layering of Tamiya Yellow and pearl and try my best to tone the pearl down and make it somehow look more marble-like? LOL! Who knows what to do really?

I think this old post from Sandy pretty much sums up how slight the metallic pearl was on the paint job (Almost nonexistent) Also a side note the car crashed at Pocono was the new March 82c which by that point the Chaparral 2k was retired from competition but I'm sure the paint color stayed the same. The 2k was used from 1979 Indy - 1982 Cleveland Here's some photos of a piece of Rutherford's 1982 Pennzoil Chaparral a good friend sent me years ago. To hold it in my hand at 'book lenght' under normal light it looks like just a bright yellow. To hold it 'nose close' under a bright light you can see very, very small metallic (possible pearl) particles in THIS example as it raced at Pocono, 1982. So for modeling purposes an good bright yellow will probably do just fine. Does anyone have photos of this car at this race and info on the crash? Sandy The 1982 Pocono Crash

Also in this picture from conceptcarz shows the slight metallic pearl in the yellow - basically almost nothing if it were to be replicated in 1/25 scale.

This is the 1980 Michigan 200 car as it has my favorite body work on it....very thin front and rear wings and the different size rear wing endplates - the right one is larger than the left!

When I was working at the speedway when this car was running I became good friends with the Pennzoil PR people and all they could say about the color of the car that it was Pennzoil Yellow a trade secret. I have been told that it starts with Brock School Bus Yellow, and many other colors so you can guess about this color all you want, only a few people know for sure. All the Pennzoil race cars where painted with this color. If you look at photos this color changes with the light, I have photos of the car a darker Yellow to a lighter Yellow taken on the same day at the track. So guess away because I don't think there is a correct answer. Unless someone from Pennzoil leaks the correct answer.
