I'm restoring/detailing an Aurora 1935 Gilmore special. I think it's 1/32 scale. Three questions: 1. Any good sources of photo's. All my books show the same shot, not much detail. 2. Does anyone know where a wire wheel kit can be found. The spokes on the kit are really thick, tires are in good condition though. 3. Can anyone point me to some good sources for generic photoetch radiator material to use in the engine compartment? Detail Master has some that might work. Thanks Dave

Hi ya Dave...
If you have the old, and I do mean OLD Aurora kit is is commonly know as a box scale....Close to 1/30th scale. Several months back I posted a photo I took off my TV from film footage of the right hand side of the 1935 Gilmore Special. (See "35 Winners right side"in this are of the forum) It showed that the right hand side of the cockpit went all the way up and covered the that side and the panel over the right hand side of the motor was covered.
As for the wheels and tires, you'd be better off getting a set of wire-wheel from south eastern fine cast. The tires and wheel are very close to this scale and what you may be looking for.
Best to you
Russ

I saw yours, looks real nice. Hope I can get mine fixed up that nice, it's pretty rough right now.
I have the old one, was a real challenge disassembling the old kit. Glue wasn't as brittle as I'd hoped.
I've cut the engine out and will make up a bellhousing separate from the chassis, and make up some engine mounts. Have removed the hood and am working on a brass one. Joining the halves seemlessly will be a real challenge.
I bought some of the last southeast finecast wheels they had 2 or 3 years ago and they look way too small. Used one set on Ted Horn's Mercedes (hope I got that right.)

This project is moving slowly. Have the hood off the kit, new firewall in place, cleaned up the frame and leaf springs and the body glued together, I'll stick those images out a little later. Adding much more detail to the engine, the carbs were molded real softly. Made the bottom and side panels to the case, new log maniford and carbs, drive for the magneto and deepened the valley and rounded for the cam covers. Had to add a makeshiftg bellhousiung and transmission, since these are not as exposed I just roughed them together from some scrap parts. Not perfect but coming along nicely. Dave

Cobra, your Geocities links aren't showing up. Since Geocities is supposedly closing down, you might want to look into posting your photos on a site like Photobucket.

It's been too long since I did an update but Bighoo's posting motivated me to get the camera out. I have all the body seams done, painted with an ivory satin Krylon, put the Indycal decals on the body last Saturday and will give it a clearcoat to seal everything in and get a shine. The frame was Alclad chromed and once that's done have the engine ready to drop in. I also added a radiator frame and screen to the back of the grill and have the 4 tube hose ready to attach to the head. Now just need to get the wire wheels and install them, get the suspension cleaned up and painted, the figures and seat cleaned up, paint up the leather and build a new dash....maybe another 6 months!.

I received a call from a gentleman last week who was asking about a model of this car, I told him I would look around for him and to check back in a few weeks. It turns out that his father was a first cousin of Kelly Petillo who drove and won the 500 with this car. I do not have the time or kit to do a build up of this car for him , if anyone is interested in doing one for him, let me know. Lance

Here's some updated photo's as I reached a stagnant point with the wheels. Engine installed, radiator tube connected to radiator with shrink tubing, silver wire for hose clamps. Wire mesh on the inside of the radiator for some detail. Had to build the dash from scratch as removing the old one destroyed it. Some Detail master guages and photoetch trim and filled with clear enamel wrapped it up. Pin heads for some other details...couldn't find any dash photos in my references. Had to keep the figures as they were REALLY glued to the seat. A lot of filing to add some detail, baisc paint then dull coat and black wash to add some depth. Then I just had to replace those thick plastic spokes from the kit in the center. The kit tire is on the left and the right side is a Duesy tire from Bill Jorgensen's kit for scale. Tires are shorter in stature yet the rims are only about 1/8 smaller. The rim on the right is the Strada Sports Duesy wheels..nice but too small. What I decided to do was use the Souther Finecast Etzel method of making rims. I bought some 11/16 tubing, measured and cut notches in the tubing then cut to thickness. The two halves I made are on the far left as I just finished the first set. As soon as the super glue sets up I should be able to glue the two halfs together sandwiching the hubs from the Duesy kit and have wheels. I'll post that later as I get further along.

Nice work Cobra!!!!
Putting a little bit more effort into these old....and I mean OLD Aurora Kits can be fun, rewarding and a good exercise in building. You got this one nailed dead on! Nice touch with the driver and riding mechanic figure as well.....Can't wait to see it finished! Also......may I commend you on doing your own wire wheels.....neat stuff!
Best to you!

I've finally gotten back to the bench. 1:1 Mustang has been taking too much time. Have the wheels done, sanded most of the tread off, which looks a little more realistic. Don't have a period correct Firestone stencil and using gloss black and decals doesn't work on that old rubber. Had to make a new front axil, rear axil and tie rod end from brass. Made a new steering arm and shifter too to exend the detail. The wheel backs were reused. I'm the process of autoclading them and will get some shots when that is done. Now I need to make a new exhaust. Dave

I have it mostly assembled, still have to fabricate the radiator, or and gas cap and finish the exhaust. Wheels turned out better than expected and the steering pieces and axils were relatively simple. When compared to the photo of the real car you see how out of proportion the drivers are to the car wheels etc. When it's finally done, in the case and I'm a project or two down the road I won't remember the differences. Glad I could motivate AlwaysIndy to finish his kit too. Dave

Great model! really like how you made your own wheels! Many modelers will not even get a kit if they know it has lace up wheels and you made your own, I have some old f1 kits I will try this on. Lance

Go Figure....I showed the car to my wife, she can't understand the obsession with adding details like the wire wheels, shifters etc to these model kits......then I mentioned I had to take it apart to rebuild it and she gave me this odd look and completely lost it laughing....I thought she was going to fall on the floor! Oh well, she spends hours looking at dogs on-line.....thinking of adding to the 5 we have now.

next saturday my wife and i will be attending a wedding at noon (putting on the suit, oh joy!) and that same night a very good customer of mine is taking us to a formal ball for a hospice charity which means me renting a tuxedo. my wife is in heaven with all this dressing up stuff while i can't stand it. they laugh at us for "playing with toys" yet they turn into little girls dressing up and playing house and see nothing silly about it. go figure.
sorry for the hijack of the thread, dave it's been interesting watching this build especially the wheels! duane

They just showed a clip on the live feed from IMS with 1935 winning mechanic Jimmy Dunham. They showed a clip of them driving into victory lane - a good right side shot of the car. The cockpit was NOT open on the right side of the car - it was completely closed off. Looks like Best/Aurora goofed on this one.

Guys, I've found a SMALL image of a copy of a photo taken by famous LIFE magazine photographer Margaret Bourke-White, who attended the '35 race and shot a variety of photos. It shows the right side of the car. Tom B. Indy Attachments:
