Fresh off of my Kuzma build here is my latest project, Tommy Milton's 1923 Miller. This is the black and gold version and not the 500 winner. It is a Gary Doucette kit and it is one of his best works yet. I've done some rudimentary work with the car. I've drilled out the holes for the rear springs and have attached the shocks. I've test-fitted the rear axle and keep tweaking it some. I've also added the seat bottom. This car has a lot of potential, here's my starting point: I used my other current project as a base. I love baseball and the pre-1920 game in particular and this book is about the 1897 National League pennant race between the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Beaneaters. These both should prove quite interesting!

The Midwest Machine is hitting on all 8 lately. You are building faster than I'm buying, Jerry. I did not think that was possible.

I will follow you on this build. Thanks for offering it to us. I have the purchase of this kit on my wish list but haven't gotten the $$$$ yet. I appreciate your comments about Gary's kits. He keeps producing some really interesting and historic cars. I can't keep up with him. I have found putting his kits together to be a bit of a challenge for me at times. The gold and black paint schemes over time have been really striking. I did not know about this one. How about Louie Meyer's 1928 winner and his 1936 car or fast forward to Smokey Yunick's multiple entries in the 1960s. Jim

How is the detail on the castings? It looks nice but the fine details are not so easy to tell with the stock white resin. Looking forward to seeing this WIP.

I've got some more work completed on the car and I've scrubbed it down for paint. Considering the snow and cold coming it may be a few days! Indy-the detail is good, it's hard to tell with the white resin but it is easily some of Gary's best work. It's gone together better than any of his other kits I've built. The suspension took some time as I wanted it to look right and sit on all four tires. Hopefully I've achieved that, only time will tell on that however. It's getting there and the extra time on the suspension will hopefully pay off. Let me know what you think.

I scrubbed down the body using Comet and a toothbrush to get the shine off so the paint will have something to grip. I've found this to be the most effective way for me to get the car ready for paint. The photo doesn't show it fully, but the shine is gone. I hope to get it painted here in the next few days!

good tip with the comet. too many times i've heard people complain when they have paint peeling off and they've done nothing to promote adhesion. the build is looking great. duane

This is going to be really cool to watch. I've got about 4 of Garys' kits and the 23 miller is one of them. I want to build one soon and watching you do this wip will help me in that direction...

Gary- I hope this encourages you to build yours and if there's anything I can do to help don't hesitate to ask!
I hate to see the hard work of modelers undercut by not doing something like scrubbing. It's simple and if done thoroughly will save a lot of grief in the long run.
I scrub my models twice, once with dish soap (I use an anti-grease type) and then the scouring powder before the paint.

I've been rather busy of late and haven't had a chance to do much with the car. The grille's been attached and I've weathered the exhaust pipe. I hope to decal the car this weekend and maybe get the wheels together. It's coming along nicely.

When I get a paint job done that looks that good, I always have questions--how am I going to ruin it? Will the super glue finger print be in an area where the decals will hide it? Will I ever be able to repeat a finish like that? When will I drop it and watch it crack? Will another racoon break in and play with it? Where is the cat? --Frank (the paranoid modeler)

Man Jerry...this is really looking GREAT! Man...that tip on using comet is awesome. I also scrub my builds twice and sometimes three times before paint. But...the comet trick is a very good idea just before paint. Heck...that would work good on plastic too... Thanks Jerry...

Thanks for the kind words, believe it or not I used future floor wax on the car applied with a q-tip to get a really glossy shine! I think it turned out very well! The decals and exhaust are on, the tires are painted and I've got to get the wheels together but once I do this one will be finished!

Jerry: WOW! Just fabulous...I'm curious as to how you found out it was run in the black color...all I have ever seen are pure white...again, another great job on an oldie!... Tim

Thank you for the kind words about the build, it was a lot of fun!
Tim, as much as I'd like I cannot take credit for finding out it was black. Gary did the research and released this as a kit, he has five different versions of this car! Two white ones which ran the 500, two yellow Durant cars and this black and gold Milton car.
