Once again more updated pictures - I built this about 5 years ago! IMO it broke because he wasn't pushing it and when you don't push a machine all out it creates harmonics! (I'm waiting for responses after that comment LOL!)

I read where Mario was told to just cruise in a certain gear and this caused a vibration internally at that certain rpm. Had he gone up a gear the failure would not have happened. I was so bummed. Had everyone covered and then some. As we all know it turns out it made for a more exciting race in the end.

Was reading an except from the book Beast about the 1994 Mercedes 500I that won Indy. I have been waiting for some feedback from the guys here that bought it first. The reviews on Amazon have been so positive (a few 4 stars, most all 5 stars, no 1-3 star ratings) that I am thinking about just going ahead and getting it. Anyway, in the preview, there was an interesting short description of Mario's 1987 engine failure which is especially relevant due to the 500I and Mario's Chevy being Ilmor engines. The book attributed Mario's 1987 engine failure to running the engine too slow Jordan

Great build Calvin.
As an Andretti fan, 1987 was maybe the hardest "Andretti is slowing..." of them all. He was in a class all by himself. Only to have one of those d**m lucky Unsers take the win. Grumble grumble.
How ironic that a guy with the reputation of being too hard on equipment lost because he took it easy.

Good looking build Calvin. I've always wondered if Newman-Haas got a big settlement from Beatrice because the sponsorship that always seemed like it would not have brought the kind of money that team would have commanded (I think, Newman, Haas, and Mario were involved with the Dan Hanna car-washes, but I could be wrong)

Super nice work on this Cal. Rear engine or front, race cars don't get any better looking than this,

I was hoping to get people fired up with my comment about harmonics and going slow but it wound up getting the opposite and quotes from books! LOL Thank you! For some silly reason this car always photographs well? Scott, I've always wondered that as well! AND In 1986 they really didn't even have any sponsor?

Andretti actually became a Hanna Car Wash Systems (Hanna manufactured the capital equipment for car washes around the world) distributor around the time his first Hanna Auto Wash franchise opened on Airport Road in Allentown, PA in Oct., 1985. Dan Hanna, founder and owner of Hanna for many years, was a race car driver himself as well as a pilot for his own Learjet and had a stable of exotic auto like a Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari Testarossa and Maserati that yes he washed in his equipment religiously. I saw it with my own eyes as I worked in marketing Hanna equipment. Google Daniel C Hanna.

I can hear Tommy Chong giving the race report: "Mario DNF'd, man! 'cause he had really bad 'vibes, man!" Well, maybe not--maybe we can get the Beach Boys to sing me out of here? "I'm picking up bad vibration..."

Can we see the engine detail? Maybe we can figure out what went wrong back in 87. Very nice looking build.

Try not to ramble here.
And you all probably covered this elsewhere coz lets face it, I am just starting to have a really good look at all this.
Is it correct that the Lola T8900 from AMT is basically the Lola T8800 kit?
Seeing these pics made me think bout turning my hand to using the decals I have from Indycals for the 87 and 88 cars Mario raced that are in hand. I have an '8900' kit on tap, but from what I am beginning to understand its the same model for all three years?
Sidebar. Saw a couple of pics of the Andretti 1986 Lola. Bloody lovely. Anyone ever do that beast in 25th?
