Here's my latest completion, well mostly completed! Peter DePaolo's 1925 Indianapolis 500 Deusenberg. I had a WIP going on this but just got going on it and next thing I knew it was done without any additional photos taken! Peter DePaolo was the nephew of Ralph DePalma and rode as his driving mechanic for a time, including the 1920 500 in which the pair dominated the early going only to encounter problems late in the race. DePaolo went from mechanic to driver and won the 1925 500 with relief help from Norm Batten. This was the first 500 that had a 100-mph average speed by the winner. This is the Chris Etzel/American Racing Miniatures kit, painted Rustoleum Summer Squash, Tamiya black and with Indycals decals. I built it stock out of the kit and it's so well engineered that it goes together with no real problems with exception of the wire wheels. They are tricky and will take time, but they turn out great with patience. All in all this turned out great, thanks for looking!

Very nice, these cars can look deceivingly simple but your build also shows off some of the complex pieces really well!

Thanks for sharing your work and your considerable skills. I too like the bits of history you provide. The Millers dominate the discussion concerning historic detail, but there WERE other winners and competitive cars then also.

It looks just right! You did it very fast but very nice! Yeah, sometimes fast builders forget to update their WIP's It's such a nice kit that it becomes addicting and fun.

Thank you for all the kind words about the Deusenberg, this was a lot of fun to build. I hope this encourages more people to crack open their Etzel kits and start building them!
You're exactly right about the Millers Motorbill! While they're great cars, of which I have plans to build a few, many great cars graced the era such as the Deusenbergs and my favorites the Monroe-Frontenacs. Miller was a genius, but so were many other builders, these machines were automotive mastery and the state of the art of an era.
Also as Alterenner pointed out I posed the car on DePaolo's memoir "Wall Smacker." It is the classic account of the era as I'm fairly certain DePaolo was the only one to record his reminisces in a book. I felt it only appropriate to pose it as such!

I agree Jerry! We need to see some more building going on here! More WIP's from others! Turn off the TV get into it and indulge yourself with the history...talk and share what you learned.....stop telling us you can't and show us you can!
Just 30 mins a day can do amazing things!

Amen! There's not much on TV worth watching in winter (no racing) anyway. That's the mildest way I can put it..

Wilbur Shaw wrote a lot of stuff in his biography (Gentlemen. Start You Engines!) about racing and how they built and maintained those old cars! Those guys did their own work, sealed their own beads, balanced their own wheels, and drove in packs to the next race (in their race cars)! Great reading! I do recommend turning off the hand-helds or TV and reading some of these books! I call them treasures! --Frank

Hey,
How about a list of books that folks find entertaining and/or historically significant? Everyone who wants to can contribute. I have considered myself fairly informed and well read on the subject of the 5oo, et al, but you guys have mentioned a few books I didn't know about. Just develop a list thread or whatever. Maybe this has already been done and an old fart like me has simply not stumbled across it. Anyhow, whaddya think?

Two other threads were started for OW themed books and I have them merged into 1 now. That way we don't hijack this doozy of a Deusy build thread Jordan

Awesome build! Very cool to see it sitting on top of "Wall Smacker." I've spent a few years researching his racing career. His son Tom DePaolo is still alive and is a very dear friend of mine. He gave me rights to his dad's memoirs and I have a screenplay and a novel soon to be published titled THE BRICKYARD BOYS.
It was amazing to learn a lot of the history from that era and to realize how different auto racing was back then. My book also has a lot of factual information from the races with Ralph DePalma and the times that they were together. I haven't built a model of Peter's Duesenberg, but I did build one of Ralph's Mercedes that won at Indy in 1915. I gave it to Tom as a gift.
Anyway, great build. Love that Yellow!
