This may sound like a dumb question to some of you but I figured I'd ask it any way. I am trying to get the rims out of the rubber tires on the one pictured below but am hesitant to do so without knowing they will go back on or won't be too mangled in the attempt to remove them. Has anyone on here been able to: 1) get just the front wheels off of an Action Dallara without having to totally remove the suspension assembly? 2) get the wheels off of the rims so they can be painted? 3) get they yellow trim off the wheel without taking off the Firestone labeling? again, any guidance you could offer would be greatly appreciated!

1) Pop the center cap off and remove the screw. If the wheel is held on by a rivet instead of a screw. I drill in the center of the rivet for about 30 seconds. This heats the rivet up allowing you to pull straight out. The tire and rivet will come out in your hand. The rivet may even be hot from the drill. Be careful not to lose the rivet or the center cap from the wheel. You will have to drill out the wheel hub a bit in order to glue your rivet back in when the wheels go back on.
2)Place the wheels in a toaster oven for a few minutes. After a few minutes in the toaster oven, the tire will be pliable enough to remove from the rim. You can also use a microwave be must be really careful not to melt your tire. 20 seconds or so. You may need another 20 second blast after the first one but don't do more than 20 seconds at a time. DO NOT put chrome wheels in the microwave!
3)I would remove the tire from the wheel first and use fingernail polish remover on a Q-Tip around the yellow stripe. Worse case is you have to put Firestone decals on if you screw up.

I use a toaster oven for more control of the amount of heat on the tire. Open & check once in awhile to see how soft the rubber is & try to pop it out with your thumb. You'll have to re heat to put the rim back in the tire & you MAY ruin the tire decals in the process or may get lucky. ELO on a Q tip will remove the yellow from the wheel as well. I use a pencil soldering iron to heat the rivet but Stu's drill method works as well. Some guys pull them off cold, when I tried that I pulled half the suspension off with it.

When removing or installing wheels on rims, i immerse briefly in some boiling water. Makes them soft enough to remove/assemble and will not melt them I have been lucky so far and just use the brute force method when removing the wheel/rim from the car but will try the soldering irion method next time
