I remember the one season that Fox had the IRL right except for Indy. It was painful!

I'd take FOX over Always Bad Coverage in a heartbeat. Fox isn't perfect, but ABC is a sorry excuse for sports coverage.

Mike...you may have a point, but.....
Any broadcasting team that has that moron Brent Musburger on it is bad, but if FOX got a hold of the Indianapolis 500 Broadcast they would have the losers from American I-Dull singing "Back Home Again in Indiana," Steve Tyler singing the "National Anthem" and they would have Wingo the Rabid Bat in Heat Cam from high above Turn Two and the cast of "24" doing pit coverage......I can't stand Fox..The have ruined NASCAR Broadcasts, that's why the ratings have dropped and totally ruined MLB.....Joe Buck is an idiot.
ABC needs to improve.....I agree!!!!
Best to you

Today is proof American Racing Series are shooting themselves in the foot.........over and over and over again.
Why did the Daytona 500 start so late?
Fox coverage sucks as usual.
Restrictor plate racing is for the birds.
If I hear the name Danica Patrick or Go-Daddy one more time I may vomit.
It has been a long time any racing in the USA has lived up to it's hype. I thought it ironic that Fox would say anything about 30 years ago with the lame product NASCAR has now. Today was a waste of time. I'll stick to my old tapes when racing was racing....and politics were BS.
Best to you

"Wingo the Rabid Bat in Heat"? Hilarious!!! Sounds like a perfect feature that Fix Noise would come up with. Seriously though, any thoughts/comments on IRL and their deal with VS? I know ABC isn't the greatest, but broadcasting only five races on ABC/ESPN seems like shooting yourself in the foot when you're trying to promote the cause so to speak. I remember what I believe was the Texas race last season when ABC's audio feed was about a half hour behind the race. I remember feed covering an Evel Knivel Jr? pre-race stunt as Helio was blazing around the track. Yes, here was Helio jumping three buses at the same time!! It became rather comical after a while. Pathetic, but with a slight twist of humor none the less.

Hi Russ,
Don't get me started on NASCAR! I was to be in Daytona with James (Hylton) for the 500. I had my drug test and all. But, it turned into a fiasco, and none of it was James' fault.
Baby Brian and Buffet Helton have done all they probably can to ruin NA$CAR. At Media Day in Charlotte back in January, all the talk was about returning to the fan roots that they have left behind, etc., etc., but that was just talk. $$$$$$$ is all that is cared about......... Mongo

I personally miss the expert reporting of Sam Posey and Bobby Unser........it made for some good entertainment. Oh yeah and don'f forget Chris Economachi. Ahhhh for the good ole days.....
I do wish they could get David Hobbs to do some Indy Car Races. He's great on the F-1 circuit!

Jim,
I miss the way Chris Economaki would ask a driver, right after his car caved in, "How was it out there?" I have a really trashed copy of the 1977 500, really grainy and I was watching it and thinking...I miss Jim McKay, Jackie Stewart and Chris Economaki. The Bobby and Sam fights were a bit much, with Paul Page acting as referee. Page was more like a traffic cop on valum..."Stop guys" in slow motion. Unser drove em nuts! I have not run into, any former drivers that like "Uncle Booby"...even his brother Al has said some uncomplimentary things about Bobby Ulcer....Rodger Ward hated him!...and Ward did say too many bad things about people. Rodger was usually in a good mood and a really nice guy.
I have audio tapes of the 63-66 500's. Say what you will, but Sid Collins and Freddie Agabashian are still the best at calling a race. I do like Jim McKay and Jackie Stewart....even if Stewart did slip and call Gordon Johncock, Jordan Goncock a few times. The old ABC wasn't bad. I like Paul Page, he's a good guy. Jim Lampley was God Awful!!! The worst. and what fool put Rusty Wallace in the booth for an Indy Car race? Rusty Wallace is the biggest phony I have ever met...and I used to work in Hollywood!
I just wish...some of these current fools would realize that we can see the television screen! We don't need the picture described to us. Fox just screws up everything they touch. It's amateur time with Fox. ABC isn't much better. I do like Scott Goodyear. Tom Sneva was hysterical.....talking about the skid marks on the track and in a drivers shorts after a spin...
Back to Chris Economaki......I had the pleasure of spending one rainy afternoon in the old media center at the Speedway talking to Mr. Economaki....He insisted I call him Chris. He has forgotten more about motor sports then most of us will ever know. He is a wealth of knowledge! He told me about his favorite drivers and races...
One funny thing...It was raining, and Mr. Economaki was taking notes off the media centers black board which had posted the fastest times of the day, and enters Robin Miller and his group of toadies and hanger on groupies into the media center. Robin sees Chris, and is going to impress his troop.....Robin goes "Chris!...." nothing. Robin tells his group that this is none other than THE Chris Economaki, The Dean of Motor Sports Reporters and goes "Chris"....nothing.....Now Robin starts showing off...."Oh Chrissy, Chris Economaki.......Econo- MAKI!!!!!!!" nothing. Then Robin turns to his entourage and says Chris is a bit deaf from covering racing for all those years so you have to yell and get his attention." Then, without looking up from what he was writing, Chris Economaki says quietly, "I'm not deaf Robin, I was waiting patiently to say something almost intelligent." With that, Miller turn and stormed out of the media center in a huff while everyone, including the man who's in charge of the media center, Bill York broke up laughing....Chris Economaki, one class act!

I see you caught the gist of my comments. I was being sarcastic in regard to Posey and Unser. However, you are right about Chris Economaki, he was never afraid to shove a microhpone in someones face and ask the just the right question to spark a little controversy! Sneva's quips were always quite risque. I'm surprised he commented as long as he did, but he was fun.
I could never understand why Wallace was in the booth. That has always been a mystery to me, and almost sacrilegious! If I must comment on NASCAR, I do miss Benny Parsons as driver and a commentator. He is sorely missed. I agree Daryl is just too much. I would rather have Michael than Daryl. Even though I may question his driving, Michael is actually funny....

For me, the bottom line on Economaki is that he is revered by everyone in racing. He's welcome in any garage at almost any time. When Chris turns up, everyone wants to see him. As for Robin...

Wasn't it Chris Economacki that interviewed AJ after the 1982 race was red-flagged, prompting the famous answer, "Coogan"?

Oh yeah that was Chris Economaki!!!.......Only Chris could get A.J. to talk in a moment like that. I have an un-edited copy of that broadcast too. Nothing like an angry A.J. and a live feed.
I miss that
Best to you
