Alright, I recently purchased a couple Ryan Briscoe #2's from ebay and am taking them apart. Was happy not to break any suspension bits! I've got a question about the camera mount on the rear wing end plate. Is that metal as well? And how can I get it off? On my Zaxbys car I never took it off and did notice some issues when removing paint, so I assume it is plastic.

Can't be...I've had it in stripper before and it didn't melt away. Hmm, gonna have to go try.

Yeah I started cutting it with the dremel and it eventually popped off. My poor dremel is called a 'mini' lol. Cut thru about half of one side of the rear wing before I sheared off my cutting wheel. Only have one left, dunno if I'll chance it.

Yes, It's plastic. I pop it off at the beginning and reuse it and mount it on the wing itself for speedway cars.

my battery powered one would do the same. would have to go about 4 charge cycles. I got a cheap one that runs on AC and it rocks.

I just use my pliers to take the camera right off. Real easy.
At first I had a battery powered dremel and it took so long to get anything accomplished. Bought a plug in and cut down on so much time. Then I bought the EZ attachments and cutting was so easy. The cutting wheels are so much more powerful and durable.

I have one of the diamond plated ones from cutting mosaic tile for my kitchen. Will cut through just about anything.

I have a plugin one, it's just smaller than others lol. Bought some dremel attachments at Walmart earlier, the vibrations are terrible for this small rotary. Think I F'd up the motor.

She's all primed and ready for a white base coat aside from the Indy bumper that I plan on purchasing tonight. Question though in regards to paint. Does combining different brands cause any issues? I had planned on using Krylon White for the base coat, then using a Tamiya for the Purple-blue color on the front of the tub/mirrors. Another question, if I did go to the spray gun, what's a decent one that won't cost me a ton? I've seen the mini-air compressors at Hobby Lobby, but I don't plan to get that addicted to this lol!

You should be OK. I have mixed Tamiya and Krylon many times with no problem. On my MetalCal build, it bit me in the butt real hard. It's kinda like Clint Eastwood said "are you feeling lucky?". to be safe, use the Tamiya white. If you want to test the airbrush waters, before spending big bucks, check out Harbor Freight for compressors and airbrushes.

Take Care Craig pasche single action (blue box) and an H-3 tip air compressor you can grab at any hardware store pretty cheap. You really only need about 25PSI but they are good to have around the house for other things too, like your tires, etc. Don't go the route of compressed air in cans. You'll spend more on those than if you just bought the compressor.

Been using the double action air brush from Harbor Freight ($20ish) to hone my skills (always been a rattle can guy), but will go for the Paasche single action soon. I also picked up the portable spray booth from Amazon that Michael Indycals mentioned once. Around $85 it does a good job of keeping the fumes out of my tiny apartment. MJ

Got the white coat on earlier today. My rear wing is butchered a bit, so I made a new one at work. Not a total loss on the original, just will need some fixing. I guess that is a benefit of working at a sign factory, plenty of spare aluminum around, as well as a shear!

Current plan is the "Mad Russian" Aleshin. I'm a bit nervous about trying some of the curves with this, like around the front of the tub.

Painted the front wing today with a flat black for the carbon feel. I'm pretty happy with how it went for a first time. No over spray onto the white, but not a sharp line either. I'll take it though.

looks good -- i can send you a sheet of my laser printed carbon fiber that would look perfect over that. Just need some solvaset. Key is to make sort of a "template" of the portions of the wing you want to cover and use that as a stencil to cut out the carbon decal. Get some solvaset on there and it snuggles down nicely.

and dont stress about those stripes. You pulled off the Zaxbys car so perfectly I don't see you having an issue with this one.

Well its been slow going here recently thanks to some colder weather in South GA. But today I was able to apply some blue to the side pods. Had a few tape issues (like normal lol) trying to make that curve on top of the 'humps'.

Had some time today to paint some more blue. Big issue now is my airbox/part of the tub has a flat blue instead of gloss...what the??? Painted the engine cover today as well and it came out gloss. For the purple on the front of the car, I'm debating about trying real vinyl from work (I've got a nice cutter that'll cut the shape I need) or go with paint. Don't want to paint if it'll go flat like this blue. Plan to use white vinyl with the sponsor Vitawin printed on it for the sponsor blockers

That is strange. It's the same metal as the rest. I've never had that happen.

I've seen that before. Another coat in lower humidity fixed the flat appearance right up... --Frank

So I take it you sprayed the airbox separate? I thought it was painted along with the rest. A few years ago during the warm months I was having problems with my clear getting frosty after spraying. I got a dehumidifier in my paint room & never had another problem.

Yes, all painted seperately around the same time though (minutes apart). It very well could have been weather. It was warm the other day, but there was rain coming.

Well, winter has finally quit and my lazy arse is making some headway on the Aleshin car. I've had to redo the front nose/tub twice now because of my stupidity with the spray can (spraying too much ink causing it to pile on). Masking that part off has proved to be very trying. I got a basic shape, but now I'm curious as to if I can touch it up with a brush? Maybe little dabs would do it? I've also been using a Testors flat black brush stick for the rear bumper in order to avoid over spray with the red already on. It does leave some 'streaks' but overall I'm happy with it.
