It's almost certainly that the mirror stalks are too thin for their liking, right?

It's almost certainly that the mirror stalks are too thin for their liking, right? those, and strangely part of the mirror bodies, which was curious for me. Maybe it's because its essentially "hollow" since I only model the outside shape. The stalks I can widen no problem. They may need to be widened anyways. Ralph took some measurements of his nicely done mirrors for me, and I scaled to that.

Did you click "Fix Thin Walls"?
This is one of the tricky things about 3d printing. Drawing for illustration and drawing for output is two different things.

I did, Michael. It made lots of weird bubbles instead of just thickening things. Jordan is going to take a look at them.
Again, I claim to be no expert at 3D printing, but I am happy to make available any parts that I can to all of you guys.

If anyone wants a custom mix of parts, unless Michael objects, I would be able to upload a custom arrangement. Looks like Frosted Ultra Detail is the optimal due to the thin parts. Also the leading edge of the mirrors seems to have a bit of distortion on the Shapeways preview, it is not in the original part (I just verified) so I am not sure how it will print.

Any possibility that these can be made in 1:64 scale?

This is so awesome. I hated doing these things. I loved the challenge but I am a perfectionist, like most of us probably are. I always had a hard time getting two mirrors exactly alike. Now we just need to get the 06 Penske mirrors and the 09 Penske mirrors. Than everything will be as right as rain. Thanks so much for your time and efforts and sharing with the rest of us.

I sent indy the mirrors from the 2008 Dragon racing car, laser scanned off the real deal, pretty darn close to what Penske ran. I think he is still working on making them "ready" for Shapeways and those can be released as well. I'll post them for sale when ready, and indy is welcome to make 1:64, 1:25, etc. variants as needed. These mirrors were from Aerodine Composites however. Not sure if Penske made them in house or not, but they are very similar. For the 06, you could cut the extra holes from the Aerodine part. For the 2008, just fill in the hole and trim back the mirror stem.

The issue with the Dragon mirrors is the long taper at the back of the mirror post. It narrows gradually so the last 2.5+mm are too narrow for Shapeway's minimums wall width. Either I have to broaden it to where it prints with no taper or you have to accept that the back edge of the mirror support might not print right so it might need to be fixed/repaired upon arrival. That is for 1/18 so for smaller scales like 1/25 & 1/64 the portion of the mirror support that is too narrow would be greater as you go down in size.
Also, if you want something besides a flat and flush mirror face then I need some hi-rez close up pics!!

Well boys, they came out GREAT! Camera needs to shrink about 15% otherwise everything is PERFECT These printed fantastic, nice and sturdy too! You can tell they didn't just print a "shell" around the camera. It's full. Not hollow. Same for the mirrors.

LMK what you think the final dimensions should be and I can make some adjustments. Glad they turned out well in the end, was quite an interesting learning experience.

I don't know if this is the place for suggestions for this 3D printing diecast customizing business, but if it is, I have another one offhand: The aerodynamics used for the 2008 Sauber BMW F1.08 used in the Canadian Grand Prix. What separates it from the regular Minichamps version is that it doesn't have those obnoxious winglets on the nose. This car, for those who don't know, gave Robert Kubica his one and only F1 victory and Sauber's first F1 win as well.

Was working a few months ago trying to get a 1/18 R/C front wing from a member here to try to draw for 3D printing. Need to get back on track with that.
