Very cool! Why was it missing the side body panels? I never could figure out why.... I recall reading that it was a sweltering hot day. Sir Sterling prefers to be comfortable while driving, old boy. MJ

Very cool! Why was it missing the side body panels? I never could figure out why.... They used to take the side panels off many cars, I've seen pictures of Brabhams and Lotus 21's racing the same way. Monaco seems to be always hot, they also used to truncate (shorten) the nose to get more air to the radiator because of the slower speeds. (some say it was easier to navigate around Monaco with a shorter nose) but they also used to remove panels and shorten noses in Australia and Mexico. Why did they remove the panels? Because they could, this was in the days of spaceframe cars, the monocoque era ended this practice. Chris

Yes, it was a very hot Mediterranean day as stated. Mossie did it cool that day! (I understand he didn't like Mossie.) Here's what I did in 1/24... Unfortunately I applied the body putty layers too thick and didn't wait for each layer to fully cure...the results are not pretty... sad, simply sad. I'm trying to find a 1/24 Mk18 made of fiberglass. It was made for the 60s slot car market. I've seen only one on Evilbay. Anyone ever seen one. The company also made a 62 Cooper, a 55 Lancia, a 62 BRM and the Lotus 18. Maybe there are others I'm not sure. Thanks for sharing your 18. How small of a motor is in that beastie? Patrick

Hi Patrick, the real one had a 1.5 litre, 4 cylinder coventry climax, or if you are building a pre-61 car like Jim Clarks, they had a 2.5 litre version. Here's a picture of such an engine, it's installed in a Ferguson 4WD
