Yes, the chrome does strip off. Simple Green takes a bit longer than the Castrol SuperClean, but will take it off eventually.

Thanks for the pics. I actually worked on the design for the car, so I am well covered, but much appreciated anyways!

Body fit isn't tight, but here is a preview. Starting to look real! Need to mask off the underwing and do some touch ups in places.

Talk about your unfair advantage! I'd hate to be trying to pass that thing in the late afternoon, with the low sun reflecting off all the chrome (I'd certainly jump at the chance, thought).

Just an FYI for anyone who uses one of sadler21's 3D printed rear wing's from Shapeways -- safe in Testors Enamel Thinner for 4 hours (maybe longer) but that was plenty of time to strip it.
I got mix of red that I am MUCH happier with and decided to strip the wing and underwing. I also screwed up previously by not throwing a white base over the self etching primer. Stupid move, I just forgot about doing it because I got so tied up in doing the chrome stuff which has a black base.

New red is on, and my favorite part begins! Best solution for me to get to tinker with the red was to have white decals printed, and overlay my various shades of red. Not 100% sure this is the one I will go with, but I wanted to test fit some of these. Also why the flash reveals that I didn't perfectly align in a few spots. Part of doing it this way, I suppose. It has it's flaws, no doubt, but it is rewarding to think "hey, I made that!" Nose and engine cover are paint. The rest are decal. Even pulled off the paint masked Dragon!

Looking very nice Mike. The best sentence in your thread is "I made this".

No epic progress tonight, but got the underwing re-sprayed red, still need to do the chrome. I'm debating on leaving ALL of the underwing (before the suspension) in red. The real car only had red on the "under" side of the underwing but I like the way this looks too, and it's more in line with the way I designed the original livery when it was in the Black and Gold Lotus colors. I'm not sure I'm going to be able pulling off chroming the suspension piece that fits in the body gap where that red sidepod stripe ends but I might be able to use a silver paint marker to at least get it "close". Anyone know if you can open those paint markers and pour in your own paint? I wonder if I could make a marker with the Model Masters Chrome enamel to be a "touch up" tool for a few trouble spots that will be tricky. I botched the Variety "triangle" decal in red because I didn't taper the edge of it to flow with the angle of the sidepod hump. I don't know what I was thinking, but a quick redraw and re-print and I'll be in good shape again. Lighting makes it hard to see, but I've also started the striping for the engine cover that will eventually extend down the nose. I put a scratch in the shock cover so I'm repainting it. Lastly, the engine cover looks bad because the car isn't screwed down snug. The paint lines flow nicely when its assembled, so don't count me off too many points for that one!

Mr. Sun came out to play today, so I took the chance to apply a few more decals before work, paint up the underwing, an then get this out in the sun before it SNOWS (ugh) tomorrow. Didn't have a chance to print the repaired Variety red overlay decals yet, but didn't want to waste the chance to get out in the sun.

You are doing a fantastic job on this. What are of the design did you work on? Just curious. Peters Motorsports Designs (http://petersmotorsports.com) is my company. I'm poor about updating my portfolio, but I'll put together a list of every car I've designed when I get some time tonight.

Getting there....slowwwwwwly I'm ready to cross the finish line with this one. Just haven't had much drive to sit down and do decals, which usually are my favorite part!

Did you do any sanding on the rear wings, Mike? I finally got mine in from shapeways and noticed they have a bit of a texture to them. Not smooth-smooth.

yes, 220 then some 320 grit paper, then Tamyia white primer. They still may not be perfect, but I'll take it over the aero package that ran....once! hah

Only the inside tire decals to go! Thought I'd have some fun with a mirrored floor effect.
