Love the work on this fantastic livery. Great to see more people making their own decals. I also love to do this. Buddy, I'll make any decal sheet you want. The problem is printing. Not very many guys out there with Alps willing to print stuff and the format is dead next year, I think. I bought one at one time just to try to help fill requests and I got almost no business so I had to sell it. I just had a baby, I don't have the funds to invest in any new technology. I can do laser printed decals for a car with a white base, that is it. It'd cost me $9,000 to buy a Roland VersaStudio 20" BN-20 Desktop Inkjet Printer/Cutter and I think that's the only other real alternative. I would love to be able to laser print onto white Oracal vinyl and then cut it, but I just don't have the equipment, nor could I ever justify buying it.

Think you misunderstood me at this point because I also design a lot decals by myself and printing isn't an issue anymore at the moment. I own an Alps myself but my printing is done by a company in Germany now. They print with UV and it's absolute the best i've seen beside silkscreen. It costs me around 30 euros for a full A4. Maybe you have to search for such a company in the US too. I could add a design of you to my next sheet and send you the decals. It's just perfect. One thing, it can't print gold/silver but that doesn't matter, they can be printed on an Alps.

I would have no problem spending that for high quality decals. It is my ultimate goal to own a diecast of every "Real" indycar I have designed with my company. I have a great collection so far, and now that I'm getting the hang of building its just going to continue to grow!

I've reached out to a few places who do die-cut UV printed decals for quotes. Smallest run's I've been able to get are 10 sheets. For a car like this, that i have a personal collection to, I'd just buy all 10 and sell the spares to recoup costs. Wouldn't be a sustainable method going forward. zippernl shared www.decalprint.de/ with me -- I might do a sample from them, too, though I don't have Corel Draw.

Chromed the underwing this morning. Elected to use Alclad on the car because the spray can is just too unreliable, and even though airbrush cleanup is annoying, there is no denying the result. Never have too much paint, runs, etc. Same process as the test paint job from the original post. Black gloss coat (Alclad, this time) and then Alclad chrome on top. It might be a slightly duller finish overall, but it is just one light coat and the bottle says multiple light coats are best, so maybe the finish will improve. At the end of the season, they stopped running mirror chrome anyways, so not totally "unrealistic" even if I don't get crazy reflections (just don't want to spend that kind of money) plus, it is just a replica! So, here is the first bit of progress on the finish of the final product...

If you don't clear over the Alclad it will rub off & you CANNOT use a solvent clear it will take the shine away. www.houseofhobbies.com/aliiaqglcl4o.html

Ralph -- Thanks. I was looking for that at the hobby shop but they didnt seem to sell it even though they sold everything else.
Can I spray this over the decals too? I always like to clear coat after applying.
How will it handle things like the red I need to paint on the engine cover? I planned to just use Testors Gloss Red in the tiny bottle as always, will this clear work on that?
Can I paint the entire thing chrome, clear it with the Alclad aqua gloss, and then use a normal Testors spray can gloss clear coat over my decals and small areas of red paint?

Aqua clear is water based. I've never applied anything over it so I can't answer that. BTW if you get any DO NOT shake the bottle,no need use it as sitting.

I'm starting to freak about this car now. I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to clear coat over the decals, and paint the red...

Settled on paint after many tests. Good old Model Masters chrome is just fine for me. Look, there's NO way I'm pulling off the mirror chrome without spending about $100 on paint (and I'd probably (expletive deleted) it up) so I'm going with what works.
I test painted the engine cover the other night (black base, chrome, then red over top of the chrome (i might try a white base over the chrome first though) and it worked perfect. No rubbing Alclad (happened on one of the "shark" fins when I was testing. Every bit of metal, and the other plastic bits were fine. Really strange and I notice zero difference with that paint and all of its "special products" and the Model Masters Enamel.
So, now I come to you for advice. I used a TK 2013 winner (blasphemy I know, but it was on hand and I had no ties to it, plus it was free) because it had black rims, and the nice detailed suspension parts. The other benefit was that just a little bit of Easy Lift Off I had a nice shiny black underwing and bumpers. My question is -- do I need to prime these (Tamyia Grey Plastic Primer OK?) or could you chrome right over the black? Do I need to sand the parts? I really haven't done much with these DW-12 underwings, but I need to execute well on this one (I do have some spares) so any advice is appreciated.
Pics of the body painted to come...

Sticking with it. Sure, it's not "mirror chrome" but its a "replica" not a museum piece. Just having another of my cars in the collection lets me look past the fact that it isn't super reflective. Photo is pretty crappy. Wife was trying to teach me how to use some extra exposure but it was dark in the room so there are a lot of shadows that make this look bad. I'll take some photos in the sun tomorrow, hopefully after I paint the engine cover and front wing end plates. Going to be quite the challenge to paint JUST the insides red. Debated about cutting them off with Dremel and gluing them back on. Might try that with one of my spare wings. I just don't think I can cut straight enough to make it look good. Really getting the hang of the airbrush. Even though its a pain to clean, I will never let myself use rattle cans again. The finish from an airbrush just can't be achieved, no matter how conservative you are with the can. Side note: I've got a potential line on "kiss cut" UV vinyl decals for this baby, but I need to buy 10 sheets. Would need to sell for $20 to break even. Is there any interest in these beyond me? If not, I'll go for regular old Alps, but the sheet would include all of the decals to do the 2013 McAfee car as it ran at Indy on a model painted up with just this base color. All stripes are on the decal sheet and fit excellent!

Looking good! I wouldn't recommend cutting the wing to paint it. It'll end up being smaller when you're done cutting it.

Ohhhh baby! Getting this finally out in the sun has soothed all of my fears. WOW! Looks great! Jordan Thanks! I test painted the headrest (black plastic) with the chrome and it came out good. Havent fit it yet to be sure, but that paint often never matches on the real car either. Always looks slightly different up close.

Slow, but steady progress here! Got the wing masked off. Thought I was using Tamyia tape (was right next to it in the store) and it screwed up my chrome finish, so I'll have to repaint the wing. Masking came out nice and sharp though, and the Tamyia was a definite win on the engine cover "red stripe". Got sadler21's speedway bumpers from Shapeways on Saturday and sanded and primed just now. Also printed myself my own carbon fiber pattern (I have one I particularly like) on my laser printer. Came out quite nice, and saved a nice chunk of $ over the hobby store, and it's closer to the proper scale. Going to apply this to the cockpit tonight.

Mike what chrome did you spray on the wing? Paint or Alclad? If Alclad it must be cleared before you touch it with anything.
Looking good so far. Every time something screws up it's called learning.

i noticed the engine cover looks really bad...when the body is fit properly it's nice and straight Got red on tip of nose and mirrors painted red. Will mask off and chrome them, and the rear wing tomorrow. Got the red on sadler21's great bumper. Should turn out nice. One of my black OZ DW12 rims fell off my table and the dog got it quick. She destroyed it. So, now I'm (expletive deleted)ed unless I want to buy another model. Not too confident in painting chrome ones with flat black. Flash really made the red look pink, but I didn't feel up to pulling out the nice camera tonight. Just a quickie cell phone shot. Going to go ahead and do a chrome vinyl decal for the McAfee shield on the bumper. Will just be easier I think. We'll see though, I might change my mind and mask off a square where I can overlay a red decal on the chrome. Depends how frisky I feel

Looking good! I paint the chrome rims black all the time. Just like anything take your time and do light coats then on the last coat do it somewhat heavy.

Why paint the chrome ones? Use Simple Green or Castrol Super Clean (preferred) to strip the chrome off the rims.

sadler21 -- does that chrome strip off? I use Simple Green all the time to strip the plastic stuff, but I didn't know if the wheels were black underneath. Great, if so.
