Bardahl Commercial The 1958 Apple Cup - Final Heat Highlights This was back when there was NO major football teams, NO Basketball teams, NO Baseball teams, NO major stick and Ball teams at all in the Northwest....all we had were our Thunderboats and people made a big deal about it! There was a lot of TV Coverage, Radio Coverage, & News papers. Back then it was battle between the Big Horse power boats from Detroit and the Aerodynamic boats of Seattle. After the war for the most part we took over the honor of having the best boats! (I'm already starting to become bias just like the people that lived in the 50's! )

I've always said that doing body work is my favorite part of model building and with boats thats most of it....so its right up my alley. I modified the front of the cockpit to more of a square front end....Miss Bardahl did have the sloped style later on but not on the 1958 Apple Cup winner. I'm also getting the Allison engine all set up.....along with the exhaust - wait 'tel you see that, its pretty neat! I dont what this part of the boat is called, but I'm just going to call it the end of the sponsons or the running surface of the sponsons....that I glued on.

After many hours of Prep work we finally have some color on! At first I was having trouble figuring out what kind of paint to use...I knew what shade of green was needed but the can was a mystery so instead of starting a "Craig Miller Color Debate Marathon" I decided to contact the MP2 Color Research Center..... .....and tell them my problem.....and right away they suggested Kyrlon Emerald Green....so that's what we went with and it looks right on! THANKS MP2 Color Research Center!

I'm going to clear coat it before decals just to be safe....but first I'm going to color sand it.

I'm not going to clear coat it. I tested it out on a test strip and the Model Masters Lacquer Clear acted like a paint stripper to the Krylon.....What makes this kinda interesting is that Michael P. used Krylon Emerald Green on his 7-up car and Clear coated it with the same Clear with great results but what I later found out is the can I got was Primer+Paint....Michael's can must be an old type that doesn't have primer mixed in ....so I guess there is a difference there? With that said its a good habit to always test paint you are not familiar with.
So I'll get out the old reliable Future Floor Wax then....it won't have the super nice flashy shine of a good clear coat job but at least it will be safe!

Decaled! and I lowered the Allison engine in with the exhaust that I'm proud of. Looks like the Green Dragon is on its way! Now I need to add bare Metal foil (Aluminum) to the bottom of the hull and add some detail. Just a little history note: You can tell this is a Seattle Boat by the little Red Flag with the blue star on the side of the cockpit which represents the Seattle Yacht Club.....all boats back then had to have an association with a yacht club....most of them were Seattle or Detroit...and some from Lake Mead.

This one is growing on me and I like the black scallop motif on the front. And what is not to like about the colors? I do like green and gold/yellow!

Must be a Packers fan. Not quite Jordan That is sweet, Jordan! Man, the old CART (and Champcar) racers are so good looking. Great design. Don't think I would be quite as inspired to do a San Diego State U car! MJ

How do you display these things? --Frank Wheels are for P%$#*& I have still yet to figure out how to really display them? I can fit the 1/48 boats in my 1/25 display but my huge 1/25 Miss Budweiser I can't find a home for it! (The dilemmas for us model builders!) Thanks! well done calvin! now you need a trailer to display it on. duane Thanks! Yeah.....LOL.....That's for sure...that's the problems of NOT having wheels! Very nice Calvin! Craft masters web site seems to be gone. Are they out of business? Paul Erlendson Thanks! Yeah their site has been down for months but I have still bought from them and they still have plans to do other boats? I'll email and ask what the current state is..... The last bunch of models I got was from the Hydroplane museum out of the X-mas catalog.

I just asked about future releases and got a response right away and he said that the 1/25 1977 Blue Blaster decals are almost done and they hope to have the kit ready by June!!!!!!! That will be awesome! ^^^^^FYI The Miss Madison cut Muncey off in turn one at Seattle! Boats don't know the difference between a 2-ton rooster tail and a normal water surface.....Muncey recovered and blew right past the Madison to win the heat.

You can't build hydros without building Atlas Van Lines. Moved as a teenager to San Diego and Muncey was a local superstar. It was a shock when he was killed. I think his widow (Fran??) carried on the team for awhile after he was killed, iirc. MJ

Yes, Fran Muncey continued the team after Bill's death in 1981. She had a new hull built and hired Chip Hanauer to drive it from 1982 to 1988.
